The Côte d’Azur is best known for the jewels in its crown – Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Nice and Monaco – but they’re far from the only gems around here. See that for yourself with stays at Franthéor sur Camping de l’Île d’Or, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Var seaside resort of Agay. On a hill with spectacular views stretching from Cap du Dramont in the east to the Golfe de Saint-Tropez in the west, this site is a must for days spent in one spot, soaking up the magnificent vistas and basking in that French Riviera glow. Prefer to bask at sea level? It’s about 400 metres from the site to the nearest beach, a small and sheltered pebbled cove that looks towards the pretty Île d’Or. The site has plenty to keep guests busy too, on those days when exploring isn’t a priority. Challenge travel companions or other guests to games of table tennis and miniature golf, and have a go on the pétanque court. No need to slow down in the evenings, either… High season sees regular karaoke and dance evenings, as well as live music and football nights. Make the most of la cuisine with a stop in the site’s bar-restaurant, or opt for self-catering by picking up ingredients in the small on-site convenience store and making a feast in the in-unit kitchenette. Be sure to start days off right with a daily delivery of fresh French bread too.

Local attractions

Guests will want to stick to the coast as much as possible, of course, and the big draws of Cannes and Saint-Tropez are both about an hour’s drive away. Visits to the former are recommended for the famed film festival, a host of museums and markets, and some stunning abbeys and island forts, while travels to the latter mean access to gorgeous beaches, modern art and maritime history. Prefer not to have to navigate twisty coastal roads during high season? Guests can board the train to Cannes from Le Dramont station, a 15-minute walk or two-minute drive from site, and settle in for the half-hour journey. Those going to Saint-Tropez can opt for a ferry trip instead… It won’t save time, but it will certainly be pretty. Closer to home base, opt for explores of Saint-Raphaël (15 minutes) and its basilica, gardens and casino, or travel onwards to Fréjus (20 minutes) where an archaeology museum, Roman ruins and a wealth of watersports keep visitors busy. For more leisurely days spent without too much travel, opt for passing the time at Fréjus’s Aqualand theme park or Luna Park amusements, or have a wander among the animals at the nearby zoo (25 minutes).
