Log off, set your phone to silent and ease into a laidback routine of swimming, sleeping and sunning yourself at Camping des Rives d'Auzon, a family-friendly holiday park in spectacular southern France. Under Odile and Jean-Pierre's management, this quiet site has become known as a top retreat for those looking to be close to the Ardèche's many attractions: with activity centres, traditional villages and sweeping landscapes to choose from, you're unlikely to be short of day trip inspiration… But there's also a lot here that's likely to entice you to stick around, including a particularly pleasant outdoor pool (heated from mid-April to mid-September). After a dip (or a doze on one of the sun loungers by the river), there's a snack bar where you can sip a glass of pastis, munch on sweet snacks or homemade pizza and admire views over a local viaduct. After dark, the place becomes a hub for music and movement, particularly in the high season when special events are laid on by site staff. Cooking for your crew? There are village markets in the surrounding area every day of the week (ask the Camping des Rives d'Auzon team for a full breakdown of the best places to go). The site is also a five-minute drive from a local store; if there's call for a supermarket, clear the boot and set out for Aubenas (15 minutes) where there are around half a dozen.

Local attractions

There's plenty to entertain in Vogüé (15 minutes' drive), a fab Ardèche village where a typical itinerary could include trips to a 17th-century château, strolls along the river and taking to the water in a kayak at Argonautes activity centre. You should also make a point of putting in an appearance at Balazuc (20 minutes), a clifftop village with an ancient bridge and climbing opportunities. After ticking off those two must-see spots, kids keen on critters may very well beam if taken to Lussas wildlife park (10 minutes), an educational farm where there are displays about all sorts of animal husbandry (donkey and pony rides are also up for grabs). Le Village de Gopher (30 minutes), a treetop playground and adventure park, should also get the wee ones' seal of approval. Montélimar (40 minutes), a larger town about 30 kilometres to the east, is also within reach of Camping des Rives d'Auzon. Here there's a bowling alley, tours around a nougat factory and an exhibit about fighter jets – an eclectic mix, to be sure, but one that's likely to keep groups with different interests content.
