Green space and forest all around, a village centre five minutes’ walk away and close to pretty riverside walks – what more could you want from a place to stay in the Ardèche? Perhaps a spacious rental tent that’s set up and ready to move into? And on a family-friendly site that’s packed with things to do? If that sounds like your sort of mix, set forth for Villatent at Camping La Garenne, a few minutes’ walk from the village of Saint-Laurent-du-Pape and the banks of the Eyrieux river. Stays here are in smart and well-equipped safari tents, with access to all sorts of activities on site including a pétanque court, volleyball areas and ping pong table – all of which are the settings for friendly competitions throughout the summer. Those of a less competitive nature may prefer the large open-air pool, which has a kids’ pool with mini slides and is fenced off to make sure none of the smaller guests wander in by mistake. High-season visitors can also hire bikes on site or join in with activities including pizza baking (for the tinies), scavenger hunts (for the teens) and wine tasting (for the grownups) – all run by Dutch speakers. Moonlight swims, live music and shows are often on the evening schedule, as are weekly themed evenings. Food for all this activity can be acquired at the site’s restaurant, which also has snacks and pizzas to take away. Fresh rolls and croissants can be ordered at reception or picked up at the village boulangerie; bigger supermarkets and restaurants are a few minutes’ drive away in La Voulte-sur-Rhône.

Local attractions

If you’re off to La Voulte-sur-Rhône (10 minutes’ drive), stick around to take a wander around its château for grand river views. A little further up the river in Étoile-sur-Rhône (20 minutes) you can launch yourself out onto the water at the floating obstacle park Étoile Park. Across the river in Soyons, a small treat for train enthusiasts is Jardin des Trains Ardechois (20 minutes), where a model railway wends its way through a 2800 m² set featuring more than 1000 mini figures. For a larger train-based treat, head to the Train de l’Ardèche (45 minutes) for a steam-powered trip through some stunning scenery. Go south along the riverside for around 40 minutes instead and you’ll get to Montelimar, famed for its sweet production and confectionery shops but also home to an aircraft museum, a toy museum and an ancient château.
