  • Friendly bohemian campsite in the Ardèche village of Saint-Thomé
  • Within half an hour's drive of Montélimar and Vogüé
  • Outdoor pool, kids' pool, bar-restaurant and play area
Colourful, kooky and just a little bit kitsch, Medrose Camping is a warm and vibrant site in the gorgeous Ardèche village of Saint-Thomé. A peaceful location that's advantageous indeed, as the region's best attractions and towns like Vogüé and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc can be reached in a 40-minute drive or less. It's impossible to do justice to the artwork and décor here in just a few words, but imagine 1960s French pop culture with a generous dollop of Frida Kahlo-inspired motifs thrown in. A colour scheme that's not easily beaten, but one that’s matched by the natural blues, greens and limestone hues of Ardèche's forests, rivers and gorges. Medrose Camping has been a work in progress since 1967, so the people here know a thing or two about hospitality. For a refreshing fruit juice or freshly-cooked pizza, head to the bar-restaurant, get chatting and spend a few hours relaxing and watching the world go by. If you like a slower pace of life, you could also amble over to the site's well-maintained outdoor pool for a swim (followed, preferably, by a long nap in the shade). For the kids, there’s also a shallow pool and a playground. And later (in high season), there's evening entertainment to look forward to for a lively end to your day…

Local attractions

Ardèche is a place full of natural wonders, exceptional architecture and great food – no surprise then that this is one of France's favourite spots for camping breaks. There's a thriving cultural scene here too – Saint-Thomé is only a 10-minute drive from the small town of Alba-la-Romaine, where every year a summer festival plays host to all sorts of creative performances. Ardèche is perhaps best-known for its gorges though, so make sure to earmark at least a couple of days to explore the region's geology. Take a self-driving tour between Vallon-Pont-d'Arc (40 minutes) and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche (35 minutes) and follow the river's zigzagging course, or hire kayaks and canoes in the pretty town Vogüé (30 minutes) to see the landscape from the water. Once back on dry land, there are lots more sporty pursuits to try out, from caving (book an expert guide in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc) to mountain biking (cycle hire is available in Alba-la-Romaine, with further options 30 minutes down the road in Montélimar). And after expending all that energy? Rest, relax and soak up the sights and sounds of nature at the foot of the Cascade du Ray-Pic waterfall (an hour and 20 minutes).
