  • Peaceful site with mountain views near Saint-Jean-le-Centenier
  • Next to the Claduègne river for a natural swimming area in summer
  • 40 minutes' drive from Vallon Pont d'Arc for canoe trips
Camping les Arches is right on the banks of the Claduègne river, with a backdrop courtesy of the Ardèche mountains. Stash a rod and a net in the car when you pack up, for fishing is a popular activity along this stretch of the river. Come the summer, a gorgeous natural swimming area is created by the owner, with plenty of space to swim, splash, and cool off under the waterfall. If your experimental toe-dipping proves too chilly for your tastes, there’s a heated pool and paddling pool on site as well. When not involved in watery pursuits, you and the family can fill your time playing pétanque or football on the sports field, or bat a few balls about at the table tennis area. Venture out from the site and you’ll not have to roam far for walking and cycle trails as well as plenty of pretty villages and treetop adventuring. For eats, the site restaurant is a cosy place with an outdoor terrace and a nifty play area to keep the kids happy during a leisurely meal. In summer you can also elect to pick up a pizza at the pool snack bar.

Local attractions

See the area in style from the Vélorail running on a disused railway line from just outside Saint-Jean-le-Centenier, a couple of minutes’ drive from the site. On the 10-kilometre route you’ll cross five bridges and go through a tunnel as well as getting some fab views of the surrounding countryside. If you’d rather tour the area on horseback there’s a riding centre 10 minutes’ drive away where you can sign up for treks into the hills and kids can have a taste of pony riding. If you fancy getting out on the water, head over to Vogüé, 20 minutes away, to hire canoes and paddle your way down the Ardèche river as far as Ruoms or Balazuc. More canoe trips can be found at Vallon Pont d’Arc, 40 minutes away, from where you can visit the huge stone arch of the Pont d’Arc and continue between the craggy cliffs of the Gorges de l’Ardèche. There are heaps of good walks to do in this part of the world – a popular one from the site is the hour-long hike to the Balmes de Montbrun troglodyte village, to see the remnants of homes, a chapel and a castle built directly into the rocks and caves.
