Should one appreciate on-site access to cracking Alps and Rhône valley views, an attentive owner and a wild countryside vibe, then Aire Naturelle De Camping La Ferme Aux Cerisiers is most probably the sort of place you’d very much like to pitch up. At the edge of the Pilat forest and in the Pilat Regional Natural Park, La Ferme Aux Cerisiers is crossed by the scenic GR 65 walking trail, with many more other hiking routes in the surrounding area. Au naturel swimming is available in the river five minutes’ drive away, and the site is also near Maclas and Véranne in the Loire department, as well as 50 kilometres from Lyon to the south and Valence to the north. Aux Cerisiers has been in the same family for over 45 years, and guests consistently come away beaming: apart from being kept in the style to which they’re accustomed (and a bit better besides), they’ve stayed among grounds filled with fruit trees, creeks and furry farm critters, and amenable owner Laurent is always around for a natter about the local area. Fruit, veggies and jus de pomme (produced by Laurent’s brother) are available to buy on site too, so you certainly shan’t want for vittles with a stay around here... Lots of other locally grown/made products are easy to find in the area too, including the regional wines of Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie.

Local attractions

As you’re in the middle of a splendid natural park, there’s plenty of outdoorsy stuff within easy reach to get stuck into: 560 kilometres of waymarked walking trails network the Pilat massif, with the neighbouring Pilat forest and beyond being spot on for walks of all sorts from gentle family ambles to challenging hikes. Also within seven kilometres are lakes and a summer pool for alfresco dips on scorching days. Should one be of a braver disposition, nerves of steel can be tested with the likes of clambering and swinging around the high ropes courses of Acrobois treetop adventure park half an hour’s drive away; viewsome gliding and paragliding flights from La Valla-en-Gier, and whizzes down the slopes of Graix on your mountain bike in summer or on skis in winter (there’s a handy ski lift to return you to the top after each and every daredevil descent). Hot air ballooning is also within easy reach. If you’re determined to stick firmly to the outdoors but want to bring it down a notch or two, horse riding and canoeing are available nearby, and an 18-hole golf course is 25 minutes’ drive from base.
