  • Five minutes' walk from the town centre of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château
  • Regular events in summer such as live music and karaoke nights
  • Heated pool and paddling pool surrounded by sun loungers
A pretty stunning setting awaits at the peaceful Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes site of Camping de la Belle Etoile: it's five minutes' stroll from the centre of the splendid old town of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château. A famed medieval centre, around 40 shops and a huge Friday morning market are all here in town, along with an international pétanque and boules museum showcasing the origins of the game (as you may have noticed, pétanque is everywhere in France, so do amble along to find out more…) Around the region, Camping de la Belle Etoile's Loire department location is between Lyon, Clermont Ferrand and Saint Etienne, 850 metres above sea level and about an hour and 10 minutes' drive from the lace-laden city of Le Puy-en-Velay. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, a via ferrata route and a fishing lake are all available nearby. You'll find most of what you need food and vino-wise in Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, but takeaways are available in high season on site if you don't care to stir even that far, and a kiosk sells drinks, ice cream and other sweet stuff. Facilities at this smartly modern park include a heated pool and a paddling pool (both open during summer), a tennis court and a ping pong table. Quiz nights, games and live music are organised during the summer holidays: there's karaoke too, so get your best warbling voice in full swing before you arrive…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Très bon accueil, propriétaires très sympathiques. Sanitaires impeccables. Proximité du village et des commerces. Environnement et nombreuses balades au départ du camping.

Disliked: Emplacements en bas du camping très bruyants (route juste derrière la haie).

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The owners, the location, views were amazing, so were some of the local roads for motorcycles. The owners had only recently taken over the site but the effort they put in to making my stay enjoyable was exceptional. Definitely going back!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site. Owners very helpful Recently taken over (early August 2023) and the new owners are setting about upgrading the site and have some great plans which will hopefully make it an excellent site next year. Shower block / facilities excellent. Fresh bread delivery in the morning. Our pitch was on a slope but not a problem as we had levelling blocks (the site is on the side of a hill).

Disliked: Very difficult to find - we went round and round, even struggled using Google Maps. Desperately needs sign-posting. Wiring for electric hook-up is antiquated but worked !

Local attractions

Saint-Bonnet-le-Château has a famed old district that's well worth a lengthy meander around: look out for the medieval and Renaissance houses, and the Gothic church showcasing murals dating from the 15th century. Three good museums are in town too, including that pétanque one; do roll along to see. Visit Le Puy-en-Velay, the main city of the Haute-Loire famed for its lace quarter and UNESCO-listed 11th-century cathedral (an important stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route). Saunter the streets of Chamarlenc and Pannessac to see picture-perfect old houses; explore the eclectic collections of the Crozatier Museum, dedicated to archaeology, objets d'art, science and technology, ethnography and natural sciences; or climb Corneille Rock for a spectacular view across the town and surrounding countryside. Less cultural and more heady times can be had closer to base with a trip to Usson Adventure Park, 20 minutes' drive away, for aerial adventures among the trees and zipwires.
