  • On the Ems river 2.5 kilometres from the watersports town of Meppen
  • Member of the German Canoe Federation
  • Canoeing trips, canoe rental, motorboat rental and undercover swimming
If it's messing about in boats you're after, this Meppen site is the one for you. Campingplatz Meppen in Lower Saxony's Emsland district is on the mighty 362-kilometre length of the Ems river, and is a member of the German Canoe Federation to easily sort canoeing trips, canoe rentals and shuttles to and from local routes. (If this is a little too sedate for your speedy tastes, motorboat rental is available too.) More of a landlubber? No problem: Emsland is also a land of hikes and cycle rides, with the EmsAuenWeg, the Emsland Route and the Hase Ems Weg bike paths all passing through the region. For sightseeing – if you're a firmly non-active site – the Dutch border is about 20 kilometres from here. The site is two and a half kilometres from the town of Meppen, famed throughout the land as a watersports haven since it's at the confluencr of the Ems, Hase, and Nordradde rivers as well as the Dortmund-Ems canal (so famed as a watery base, in fact, that Meppen translates as delta). Even indoor water times are sorted out here, as Meppen is also home to a centre with free undercover swimming. Amenities include showers and toilets, chemical disposal and free wifi. A supermarket is 200 metres away.

Local attractions

As well as being a famed watersports cente, Meppen's also home to an archaeology museum (the Exhibition Centre for the Archaeology of the Emsland; try saying that after a local ale or two), with exbhibirs on the region from the Stone Age to medieval times. Arty sorts can browse the arts centre on the same street (Koppelschleuse street), while thespian types – and families – should have a dramatically fine time at the summer performances in nearby Esterfeld Forest. Just outside town (10 minutes' drive from the site), have a more peaceful few hours at the Borkener Paradies nature reserve. Emsland's biggest town, the handsome riverside settlement of Lingen (20 minutes) is a top spot for a resftul day wandering along the Ems river or around its Old Town; if you're feeling energetic, set off from here along the 220 kilometres of signposted bike trails into the surrounding countryside.
