  • Caravan park in Central Transdanubia’s wine-growing region of Somló
  • Somló Castle and several vineyards within 10 minutes’ drive
  • Kids’ playground, shared kitchen and barbecue facilities on site
If a glass of wine is all part of the fun on your camping holiday, why not overnight right next door to a vineyard? And not just any vineyard, but one in Hungary’s smallest wine region, for Somló Stellplatz is a small caravan park next to a winery at the foot of Somló Hill – where white wines have been produced since the 12th century – in Central Transdanubia. Sitting in the shadow of landmark Somló Castle, which looms on the horizon, the park has handy facilities to make your stay a breeze, including electric hook-ups and drinking water at all the pitches, as well as a comprehensive waste-management and recycling service. The site is gated for your total security and peace of mind, and access is through an automatic barrier with individual entry codes. Other useful amenities include a playground for kids to stretch their legs, plus a small communal kitchen for cooking up simple meals and a barbecue for alfresco grilling.

Local attractions

Wine buffs can go tasting (and most likely buying, face it) at Somló wine estates including Bogdán (five minutes’ drive), Csordás-Fodor and the organic winery Kreinbacher. You can also tour the vines and cellars at Somló Abbey (all 10 minutes), where wine production first began several hundred years ago. Somló Castle (10 minutes) peers over the surrounding countryside from its hilltop perch, and is open for rambles around the photogenic ruins of its 13th-century tower and ramparts. Walk up there in half an hour from the Somló Hill car park and you’ll be rewarded by far-reaching views over the surrounding vineyards. Other historic buildings to check out include St Margit Chapel (10 minutes), a church much remodelled down the centuries, now with a Baroque facade and a revered centuries-old linden tree in the churchyard. Close by is miniscule St Ilona Chapel (five minutes), accessible only on foot and topped with a gleaming gold-tiled tower.
