  • Peaceful rural site at Roccafinadamo in the Abruzzo hills
  • An hour's drive from the coast and Gran Sasso National Park
  • Bar, barbecues, picnic tables and homegrown produce for sale
‘You are now entering a stress-free zone’ reads a sign at the entrance to Rocca di Sotto. And it doesn’t lie – Dutch owners Jan and Willeke have set up in a supremely serene spot with their place in the Abruzzo hills. Life is pretty sweet up here... start off with a wander around among the olive groves, perhaps selecting a shaded spot for a siesta or picking up fresh eggs and veggies from the ‘pay what you want’ table of homegrown produce. Communal barbecues and picnic tables are dotted around the site for alfresco eats with stunning rural views. Come the evening, pull up a chair at the little bar for snacks and drinks (near the woodburning stove if the temperature’s dropped a little) or recline out in the open to gaze up into the dark skies. Venture out into the surrounds for more fresh-air activity: follow the path through the orchards for a streamside stroll or head off to the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park for something a bit more leg-stretching. Heading down from the hills, it's an hour or so's drive to the resorts, beaches and villages of the Trabocchi coast.

Local attractions

There’s much meandering to be done in the hills around the site, taking in the lovely views and keeping eyes peeled for flocks of sheep and herds of cows along the way. Lots of local villages are worth a stop too – have a chat on site for ideas of places to visit and details of market days. Lengthier hikes can be had in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, 45 minutes’ drive away. This area, known locally as little Tibet, is frequently used as a film location because of its gorgeous backdrops; if you’re lucky you might spot wolves and bears in the distance. Around an hour away are the beaches of the Trabocchi coast, named after the wooden fishing huts on stilts along the shoreline. Hit the beach at Pineto or Roseta degli Abruzzi and then seek out those huts that have been converted into seafood restaurants.
