  • Family-run site on the shores of Lake Garda in Moniga del Garda
  • Sirmione, Salò and Gardaland within a half-hour drive
  • Outdoor pool, play area, restaurant and kids' activities
A setting on the shore of Lake Garda, within an ancient olive grove and with country views all around… yep, it’s safe to say that Camping Piantelle scores plenty of points on the location front. And there’s more… because this independent family-run Lombardy site isn’t all about the pretty views (though they are indeed mighty pretty). It’s also got a lot going for it in the convenience stakes, as it’s a mere kilometre from the centre of Moniga del Garda and within easy strolling distance of several shops, cafés and restaurants both in town and along the water’s edge. Looking to spread your wings a little further? There’s plenty of scope nearby for days of watersports, mountain walks, winery visits and trips to historic cities such as Verona and Brescia (both of which are within a 40-minute drive). And of course there are lots of fab spots to seek out around the lake shore, including pretty towns like Salò and Sirmione, or nipper-pleasing attractions like Gardaland. Back at base after whatever outings you’ve chosen, cool off at the outdoor pool or catch some rays on sun terrace loungers. Activities for kids and teens run on site through the summer months, although you may also like to send them off to the play area or teach them the skills needed to make them demons on the pétanque court. Elsewhere on site there’s a restaurant and bar to provide you with a fix of tasty local food and cool drinks; there’s also entertainment laid on here on summer evenings.

Bravo electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice staff and clean facilities.

Disliked: Market in the camp was a bit poor stuffed, but cheap. Some sites for tents are little shaded.

Local attractions

Lake Garda’s got some spectacular vistas to take in, of course – you could pretty much pick any spot around the shoreline for a gorgeous watery vista. The towns along the water’s edge are equally pic-worthy, too: take trips to elegant Salò (15 minutes’ drive) to explore the castle or scoot over to Sirmione (half an hour) to wander around the historic town on a lovely little peninsula. Away from the lake’s edge there are more excellent ambles to be had in the museums and Duomo Vecchio of Brescia (35 minutes) or following in the star-crossed footsteps of Romeo and Juliet in Verona (40 minutes). Violin-producing town Cremona (an hour) is a must for musical types, while those who’d rather give their legs a good old workout may like to steer instead to uphill hikes at Monte Pizzocolo (40 minutes) or Monte Baldo (an hour). History and hiking not finding favour with the small sorts? Take them off for action-packed days at the sprawling Gardaland (half an hour) – a theme park, Sea Life aquarium and Lego-themed waterpark all rolled into one.
