Media types have a lot of love for Camping Vignanotica in Gargano National Park, a well-maintained site that has appeared in many a magazine. And is it any wonder when it’s less than a 500-metre jaunt from a private beach, a spectacular spot framed by tall white cliffs, and rents out canoes and pedal boats for slicing through the water to the splendid sea caves in the area? When you’re after some shade, head back to the park and spread out under the centuries-old olive trees and thick pines, or pull on a wide-brimmed hat and seek out some indoor sights in local resort towns like Mattinata and Vieste (around 30 minutes’ drive). Camping Vignanotica is in rather a remote part of Foggia, so the owners have added all sorts of services on site, like a snack bar, shop and tobacconist, to make sure you don’t have to drive out of your way to run errands off base. Other facilities at this fab site are all about leisure: think a bar for adults to have sundowners at, a play area where the kids can let off steam and wifi for lazing about while browsing the web.

Liked: 10 minute walk to a really nice beach, but go early morning as it gets busy during the day.

Disliked: Campsite seems to count on their location to keep getting business. Facilities all very grotty and in serious need of renovation. Shower and toilet cubicles mostly broken and dirty. Almost all pitches are on a slope - luckily it wasn't full so we could move pitches 4 times until we found one that was less sloped. Shop/bar has very limited selection. Considering this was the most expensive campsite we stayed at in Italy, we were extremely disappointed.

Liked: Sehr schöner Campingplatz, umgeben von Olivenbäumen, hier kann man wirklich zur Ruhe kommen

Disliked: Leider sind die Sanitäranlagen nicht wirklich einladend, von 6 Duschen war leider nur 1 Dusche so halbwegs zu benutzen. Die Türen konnte man nicht abschließen und Schimmel in den Fliesenfugen Auch ist die Anreise mit Wohnwagen sehr herausfordernd. Bei der Serpentinen Straße sollte am besten kein Auto entgegenkommen und auch die Einfahrt auf den Campingplatz ist sehr nervenaufreibend, da sie sehr abschüssig ist und es vorkommt, dass man mit den Stutzen vom Wohnwagen aufsitzt

Liked: Campeggio tranquillo, un po'datato, in 5 minuti a piedi arrivi alla spiaggia di Vignanotica la risalita è più ardua e se hai ombrellone ecc anche 15 minuti. Market aperto tutto il giorno fino tarda sera.

Disliked: Bagni Vecchi sarebbero da rinnovare e non molto puliti. Poca ombra ma sufficiente. Market con prezzi esosi. Ci vorrebbe la navetta per la spiaggia magari due tre volte al giorno per risalire. La spiaggia è presa d'assalto dai barconi turistici a tutte le ore senza rispetto per il mare la natura. Inquinano tantissimo e l'acqua al pomeriggio è sporchissima. Se vanno avanti così tempo 10/20 anni hanno rovinato tutto.

Local attractions

Vignanotica beach, the nearest bit of coast to this park in Puglia, is lapped by the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Manfredonia and has plenty of handy facilities including parasols, sunbeds, showers, toilets and bars. Spend days having a break by the water, perhaps leaving your lounger every now and again for a gentle kayak around the coast or to try out some kitesurfing and surfing. For more beaches to wind down at, mosey to the ones around Mattinata – one of the most eye-catching coastal towns in Gargano – or chuck some culture into the mix by visiting the necropolis on Mount Saraceno (half an hour), the remains of the Saint Maria of Pulsano abbey (an hour) and the Roman villa ruins near the port of Mattinata (half an hour). Countryside explores are also to be had – the site is in a national park after all – during mountain bike rides on the dense paths of Gargano’s tree-lined hills or while trekking in the Umbra Forest; jeep excursions are also available (ask for details on site) if you’d rather have someone drive you around. Back down by the sea, boat excursions are organised by local providers in the mornings with some vessels sailing to the Tremiti Islands and around the Gargano sea caves.
