  • Family-friendly site on a traditional farm on the Platani river
  • Mussomeli Castle 25 minutes’ drive; Valley of the Temples 55 minutes
  • Outdoor pool with whirlpool; dogs welcome; restaurant and barbecue
On the banks of the Platani river, in the middle of a large olive and citrus grove between the villages of Cammarata (15 minutes’ drive) and Acquaviva Platani (20 minutes), Tenuta Lanza sits on a traditional estate that has been handed down from generation to generation for over a century. It is an excellent spot for a Sicilian holiday – whether you’re all about gastronomy, history and architecture or just chilling. Wake up to views of Mount Cammarata (40 minutes), looming large to the west, then head to the pool (complete with whirlpool) for a day of complete relaxation at this peaceful, dog-friendly spot. If you get hungry, you won’t have far to go, for food (from traditional Sicilian dishes like pasta with aubergines to charcuterie boards) is served under the gazebo facing the pool. There’s also a communal barbecue if you fancy throwing a sausage or a burger on the grill (the nearest shop is a 15-minute drive away). The pétanque court draws those who are in the mood for a little gentle action, while those who go angling on the Platani might catch an eel, as well as glimpses of coots, ducks and other birdlife. A network of trails enables you to explore this spectacular area of central Sicily on foot or by bike. On-site amenities include well-maintained toilet blocks with showers (including facilities for disabled guests), a washing-up area and a large tub for washing clothes.

Local attractions

A vast seasonal aquatic park, Scivolandia Cammarata (10 minutes’ drive) has six pools, including one with artificial waves and others with waterslides for all ages. Parents can keep an eye on the kids splashing about in the paddling pool from the comfort of a Jacuzzi, and there are also shaded picnic areas. Perching atop a forbidding rocky spur, Mussomeli Castle (25 minutes) was built between the 14th and the 15th centuries. Take in views of the surrounding countryside (and all the way to the coast on good days), then check out the simple stone chapel, the Barons’ Room and the prison cells. In the countryside on the outskirts of Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples (55 minutes) is a spectacular archaeological site with several well-preserved structures (such as the Temple of Concordia) dating back from the fifth century BC. Also here are the remains of a Paleochristian necropolis and the Archaeological Museum ‘Pietro Griffo’, with artefacts unearthed at this site.
