  • Green and peaceful site among orchards in Sicily's Catania province
  • Half an hour's drive from classical sites and an hour from the beach
  • Pool and bike hire, pick-up from transport hubs, five mins from town
Are you up for ancient sites and volcano views, citrus orchards and dazzling blue seas? Then say a big ciao to this top-notch farm site in Sicily’s Catania province. The bits of Agriturismo Papanza not given over to giving you a good time are occupied by almond and citrus orchards, fragrant crops they’ve been cultivating here for at least a couple of millennia. With views towards Mount Etna and an abundance of ancient Greek and Roman sites close by, you’ll feel as if you’ve travelled in time as well as space. Not that there’s anything ancient about the facilities on this friendly and well-maintained Italian site. Among the colourful plants and shady trees, there’s a very tempting swimming pool surrounded by seats and loungers; you could hire bikes from the site to explore the area then come back for a refreshing dip. The washrooms are bright and clean with hot showers, disabled access and parent-child facilities, there’s a laundry with sinks, washing machine and dryer to keep everyone looking smart and everyone has access to a shared kitchen. Dogs and barbecues are welcome and the proprietors can pick you up from public transport hubs. It’s a five-minute drive into the nearby village of Valguarnera Caropepe, containing a quantity of shops, supermarkets, bars and eateries that wouldn’t disgrace a town.

Local attractions

To see some fab Sicilian countryside, make for the disused mine, a 20-minute drive away. That might not sound the most appealing of natural locations, but the onetime sulphur works of Floristella Grottacalda have been transformed into a wildlife park and walking area of great beauty, ideal for nature-spotting and picnics. Further afield, it’s an hour to the birdwatchers’ mecca of Simeto, where legions of feathered visitors like kingfishers, hawks and herons congregate where the riverine wetlands meet the coast. About an hour and a quarter’s drive away, it’s the start of the Parco dell’Etna, a protected wilderness of mountains, caves and wildlife dominated by the still-very-active volcano. For city slickers, it’s 25 minutes to the smart squares and stylish shops of Piazza Armerina, and 50 minutes to Caltagirone, whose reputation for fine ceramics results in a sizeable museum and even more sizeable opportunities for shopping. Catania, with its amphitheatre, WW2 museum, botanical gardens and wide sandy beach is an hour away. If it’s the classical past that gets your motor running, make a beeline for Morgantina, an excavated Greek colony-city dating back 28 centuries, and the remarkably well-preserved mosaics and wall paintings of the Villa Romana del Casale, both half an hour away. If the presence of a rumbling volcano doesn’t excite all members of your party, take them over to Etnaland (50 minutes) for rollercoasters, white-knuckle rides and waterslides.
