Frankly, one of the juiciest features of Sicily's Agricampeggio Alessandra is the on-site fishmonger. For this is a seaside site: so you can land a tasty specimen from the site's expert, sizzle it up on the guest barbecue, and settle down for alfresco supper with a backdrop of sands and the sun setting spectacularly over the water. As that will likely get you in the mood for a foodie mission, you should also be stoked to hear there's a bakery at this smashing little site as well – and a greengrocer, and a shop selling organic local produce. The ancient village of Torrenova a few kilometres away has a few restaurants; within 15 minutes' drive in either direction are the coastal towns of Capo d'Orlando and Sant'Agata di Militello for more of the gastronomic same. Agricampeggio Alessandra is in the village of Zappulla, in Sicily's Messina province. Guests can sign up for guided bike and horse trekking tours from here, rent a car or buy tickets for a shuttle service to the Aeolian Islands. Or, just decide to stay on the beach as there's direct access to the sands; you should probably consider bringing a picnic too. A gym awaits too if you need to burn off copious amounts of Sicilian cuisine. If not, there's a botanical garden for gentle afternoon snoozes, and a playground to occupy the kids – just in case you want them to burn off copious amounts of excited seaside energy.

Local attractions

There's loads to do around this seaside setting, such as booking an excursion on site to the Aeolian Islands to explore Stromboli Crater or Valle i Muria beach; taking in the vistas from Quattrocchi or Sciara del Fuoco viewpoint; or visiting the archaeological museum boat Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano. It's 40 minutes' drive to Nebrodi National Park, dotted with the ruins of Byzantine monasteries and churches. Hiking and mountain biking are the main activity options, on the lower slopes among holm oaks and cork trees, or further up through oak and beech forests. This is a wildlife haven too, so keep an eye out for foxes, hares, porcupines and Nebrodian black pigs. Cefalù, just over an hour's drive away, is well worth a day trip for the long beach running parallel to the town, as well as sights such as the medieval district and the Tempio di Diana, an ancient megalithic monument with spectacular views out over the sea.

Liked: It is a large and well maintained campsite with lots of space. There were some campers but we were the only ones with a tent and had a huge area to relax. There was a path to the pebbly beach that was pretty empty.

Disliked: There was a weird way of assigning a toilet and a shower. We were given a bunch of keys and were only allowed to our numbered toilet that was not so easy to open. Another key to get to the beach and another one to open a gate for cars and another one to open a small gate an so on. Management there are like hawks. We came to register and pay for a night and started to add a password for WiFi but this manager started to accuse us of just coming to use internet. Something wrong with her state of mind. But a lady receptionist was very helpful

From the manager: Dear Maria, We are sorry if you had a bad experience in our campsite. We can't understand what you want to say when write "We came to register and pay for a night and started to add a password for WiFi but this manager started to accuse us of just coming to use internet " We assigned the bunch of keys is beacouse all guests are allowed to our services even when the reception is closed. Our staff is always more kind. Thank you
