As we may have said once or twice before, we reckon Sicily is simply splendid. And so is its southern side, an island area of natural and smashingly scenic landscapes, ancient heritage and sandy beaches for swimming, fishing, cycling, golfing and horse riding. Settle down for all the above at family-friendly Agricampeggio Capo Scalambri, set a short distance from said sandy beaches and also – billy bonus – near the family farm selling fresh fruit and veg such as watermelon, apples and tomatoes. Juicy watermelon on a Sicilian beach? We think we could manage some of that, yes. Site facilities include a play area, free wifi and shower and loo blocks suitable for disabled guests. Agricampeggio Capo Scalambri is in the province of Ragusa, a quiet and unspoilt place of old-school variety and with over 85 kilometres of coast along with many traditional Sicilian fishing villages. The province's capital Ragusa is within easy driving distance of the site and is properly ancient as well as pretty splendid (and splendidly pretty): it's one of the eight cities of the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a lower Old Town separated from its upper town by the deep ravine of the Valle dei Ponti. The team also recommends seeing the Necropolis of Pantalica, a collection of cemeteries with rock-cut chamber tombs dating from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries BC and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the cities of Modica, Noto, Vittoria and Comiso, all easily accessible from the site. Another popular place for visitors in the area, fourteenth century Donnafugata Castle, is about 15km from Ragusa city, and as we're insistent types, we insist you mustn't miss the Villa Romana del Casale: did you know it has the biggest collection of Roman mosaics in the world? The peaceful beaches, hiking and birdwatching of the Vendicari Natural Reserve are all nearby and the city of Agrigento is within driving distance.
