  • On the Mediterranean coast with direct access to a sandy beach
  • Selinunte Archaeological Park and the Cusa caves within 5 kilometres
  • Paddling pool, playground and restaurant serving stonebaked pizzas
Seeking high and low for a seaside site on the Mediterranean coast of Italy? Seek no more – you might just have found your match at Camping Helios. Crystalline waters and a sandy beach are this coastal park’s main draw... But aside from this, it’s also in an area that’s filled with historic attractions such as the Selinunte Archaeological Park and the Cusa caves for history-themed jaunts. There's a laidback vibe at this place, as well as a friendly (and handily multilingual) reception team, who are always happy to help you plan your days of sightseeing. While you’re lazing around on the beach, kids will (if they don’t want to join you on the sand) find their fun in the paddling pool, around the ping pong and football tables and the playground. To aid in your having an extra idle or amusing time, you can hire beach umbrellas and sun loungers plus pedalos and kayaks at the beach. All that drenching in the sun is hungry work – for mealtimes back at base, tasty stonebaked pizzas are served straight from the big pizza oven over at the restaurant. And as for amenities, the site has a tiptop bathroom block with toilets and hot showers, as well as a washing-up area and a laundry room.

Local attractions

History buffs will find plenty to do in the vicinity, as the site lies three kilometres from the ancient Greek Selinunte Archaeological Park and five from the Cusa caves. For something town based, the pretty little medieval settlement of Castelvetrano – famed for its green olives (of which sampling is a must) – is a 20-minute drive inland for wanders around historic highlights such as its Museo Civico, the Bellumvider Castle and the 13th-century Palazzo Pignatelli. If you’re into wildlife spotting and birdwatching, head out to the sand dunes of 129-hectare Belice Nature Reserve, around 40 minutes away by car and between the final stretch of the Belice river, Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo cape. The coastline, marshland and Mediterranean scrub here provide a habitat for the likes of herons, ducks, gulls and the Caretta Caretta turtle.
