No man is an island, apparently, but every man – and woman – should surely visit at least one in their lifetime. Live the island life to the max with a stay at Camping Villaggio Sole e Mare on the island of Elba, 10 kilometres off the Tuscan coast. As it fronts onto a sheltered beach that looks out over the Mediterranean, the site is, unsurprisingly, a top spot for those who are drawn to the ocean: the bay is safe for swimming and diving, but you can hire a pedalo if you’d prefer to stay afloat of rather than in or under the water. Around the region, Elba is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, so you can get to grips with the island on a guided walking tour, keeping an eye out for dolphins in the coastal areas. Not wanting to leave your island enclave won’t be a problem either as your needs are well-served on site: grab a bite at the restaurant, wash it down at the bar and pick up all your essentials at the mini market. And if you seek to go fully Italian? Wheel yourself along to the Sole e Mare pizzeria for pizza straight from the log-fired terracotta oven. To burn off some of those tasty, tasty calories, head over to the multisports field for tennis, volleyball or mini football, or take the less active route with billiards, table tennis or table football.

Local attractions

Climb to Elba’s highest point at the peak of Monte Capanne, an hour from the site, for spectacular views over the island and to the Tuscan coast in one direction and to the French island of Corsica in the other. To see it from ground level, rent a mountain bike and have it delivered directly to Sole e Mare so you can be in the saddle from the moment you hit the road. Take to the seas, and explore the coast in a rented boat from nearby Bagnaia, 10 minutes from the site, or join a mini cruise around Elba if you’d prefer to hand control to someone else. If you'd rather be drawn into the rich history of the island, take a trip to the ruined fort at the Castle of Volterraio or learn about the Elba's background in mining at the Museo dei Minerali, both within 20 minutes. And then? Re-emerge in the present with a stroll through the botanical gardens at L’Orto dei Semplici, a 15-minute drive from Sole e Mare, and unwind at the thermal spa at San Giovanni, 25 minutes away. Whatever you opt for, don’t forget to sample the local delicacies: Aleatico wine and Schiaccia Briaca cake: you might (should) even want to bring them home with you…
