  • Eco-friendly wild camping site in a remote Apennine forest
  • Two kilometres' walk from the village of Castiglione di Garfagnana
  • Outdoor kitchen for guests' use and communal evening meals
Nature seekers, go wild. As the name may well suggest, Wild Camping Paladini is a place where you can cast off modern cares and get back to a simpler way of life. In a secluded part of an unspoiled Apennine forest two kilometres from Castiglione di Garfagnana, this eco-friendly community aims to have minimal impact on its surroundings and maintain a peaceful atmosphere. You can’t even drive up here; you’ll need to ditch the car a kilometre and a half away and walk, cycle or ride to the site so as not to disturb your neighbours (of the human variety as well as the local deer, wild boar and foxes). Facilities are kept to a minimum here but you’re not entirely without comforts: an outdoor kitchen has drinking water and places to keep food and cook – you can either do your own thing or join with other guests for a communal meal of an evening. A compost toilet and a shower (with woodfired hot water) are provided and there’s also a little wood-framed cob building housing a sauna – all the better to relax the muscles after a day of hiking or biking… It’s not just nature spotters who come here – the site also particularly welcomes musicians, painters and artists in search of inspiration: hang out in the lounge area’s hammocks or gather round the communal campfire by night for some interesting chats.

Local attractions

When you do want to head out from the site, you’ll be doing so on foot or by bike as there’s no vehicle access. Handily, these are also the best ways to see the best of what the immediate area has to offer, thanks to some tracks that were put in place during medieval times to lead between hilltop villages. A popular route from the camp is the two-kilometre trail that leads to the walled village Castiglione di Garfagnana where you can see the medieval bridge and have a swim in the river that flows beneath. If you do have access to your own wheels (either two or four will do), you can travel a little further afield, such as 20 kilometres away to the hilltop Verrucole Fortress, thought to date back to the 11th century. Nearby is the Selva del Buffardello Adventure Park, where you can see the forest from a different perspective from one of the 10 treetop adventure trails.
