  • Peaceful green site with pitches set among spacious forest clearings
  • Next to Westerbork and a short drive to the Drentsche Aa National Park
  • Green space, woodland and big pond on site for nature-based activities
A mightily pretty setting, handy location and heaps to do in the immediate vicinity are what you’ll pitch up among should you quite rightly decide to have your hols at Landgoed Börkerheide, a greenly scenic and peaceful woodland retreat with spectacular vistas of the surrounding heather-filled fenlands. The site's local Midden-Drenthe village of Westerbork is a well-appointed one with lots to see and do around it. Guests are well advised to bring their bikes along as this is prime pedalling territory, but if you haven’t got room for yours then a comfy pair of walking boots will do just as nicely, for the excellently scenic ambles around the flat surrounding fens. Börkerheide is set among a meticulously manicured estate, among a mature forest within easy walking distance of Westerbork. A public pool (to which access for guests is gratis) lies adjacent to the site for kids and grownups keen to swim, and a short drive will take you to the cities of Assen, Emmen and Hoogeveen for plenty of restaurants, shops and bars. Entertainment on site focuses on a back to nature approach, with lots of surrounding heathland for curious kids and grownups to explore, as well as wildlife watching, nature trails and foraging in the woods, and angling from the banks of a small reed-lined lake, into which you can cast a rod and attempt to catch a fish or two. As campfires and barbecues area allowed – nay, encouraged – here, family mealtimes can be had outdoors, and the site’s central campfire is a smashing spot for evenings spent mingling with other guests.

Local attractions

If you bring along a bike, the scenic surrounds of the park’s estate and the wider Westerbork locale make for particularly pleasant pedals among the heather-covered fens and woodland areas. During the summer, lots of family events are held in the village square, and plenty of historic spots are around too for guests to explore. Perhaps the best known of these in the locale is the former World War II transit camp of Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork in Hooghalen, a 15-minute drive north of the park's local village. This site’s visitor centre doubles as a museum, and while you can catch a speedy shuttle bus into the camp itself, you can instead follow the three-kilometre Milky Way Path to reach its core. A top exploring spot is the Drentsche Aa National Park, and its waymarked hiking and cycling trails as well as sand trails for horse riding.
