A peaceful place in Peru… in a green setting surrounded by mountains… sounds pretty perfect for a lush and quiet hol… Accessing a hideaway such as this is a cinch at Camping Villa André, a peaceful site in a scenic area in Peru’s Lima Region, surrounded by the Sierra de Lima mountains and with two streams running through the grounds. Those Sierra de Lima peaks as well as those of the Peruvian Andes are the backdrop here; close by, the meandering waters of the Chillón River passes the Canta Province village of Obrajillo a few hundred metres away. Rafting, hiking and walks by waterfalls are all top picks in this rural mountainous setting, along with fishing, horse riding and cycling – and sampling the juicy trout famed in the area. If you’re on a Peruvian road trip or arriving for a break from busy urban scenes, Lima is two and a half hours’ drive away or three hours by bus. Villa André is a simple, basic, safe and friendly site in a lush setting (see pics), with plenty of green areas to laze about on, and with toilets, showers, a washing-up area and disabled facilities. Barbecues and campfires are allowed and supplies can be picked up in Obrajillo, but foodies wanting to sample regional Peruvian cuisine should set their sights on the Villa André restaurant and its menu of patasca, rich chicken soup, lamb, beef, wine, cocktails… and plenty of that plump local trout.

Local attractions

This is an area for keen walkers and hikers: the Chillon river (and its waterfall) passes by the site and walks along the riverside are highly recommended by the site team. Take a walk between the small neighbouring villages Obrajillo and Canta, known for their farms and trout fishing – you do know this is an area particularly famed for its trout fishing…? Ask the amiable Camping Villa André team for ideas on other activities in the site surroundings, such as fishing (yes, for trout) or cycling (bike rental is nearby). Or have a day trip to the Junín National Reserve a few hours’ drive to the east, where species to spot around its lake and grasslands include grebes, Andean foxes, Pampas cats and hog-nosed skunks. The Obrajillo and Canta restaurants have a good range of local dishes: as well as the trout, the site staff recommends trying the region's cheese, chicken soups and meat roasts.
