  • Luxury glamping site near Ferreira do Alentejo in the rural Alentejo
  • A 20-minute drive to Lake Odivelas; an hour to Atlantic beaches
  • Swimming pool, kids’ disco, self-service bar and animals on site
Fancy a potter on the plains in Portugal’s Alentejo region, with somewhere luxurious to come back to at night? Or are you after a peaceful place to idle around a pool in the sun? Whatever sort of glamping holiday you’re after, you’ll hit the jackpot with a stay at Glamping Portugal near Ferreira do Alentejo. Accommodation on this rural estate is in stylishly fitted out safari tents with a chilled vibe, simply built from wood with separate bedrooms (and proper beds), outdoor kitchens, private bathrooms and a covered decking area for chilling. This is a laid-back choice for couples looking for some peaceful together time, with lovely views over olive groves or sunflower fields. There’s masses of room between the safari tents to ensure privacy so you won’t be disturbed. At night you can spark up the barbecue, cosy up on your decking to watch the colourful sunset and enjoy romantic evenings staring up at the stars with a glass of something chilled in hand. Or how about gathering at the self-service bar (open 2pm–6pm) to swap stories of the day’s doings with fellow guests over local wines, beers, soft drinks and tasty tapas? Tempted? Glamping Portugal is also a clever base for kids, with plenty of space in the safari tents and adjoining pup tent if you need more room. Handy amenities to keep youngsters busy include a sandbox for toddlers to rummage in, swings and lots of board games – as well as an illuminated disco in the pool on some nights. Chances are the kids will also love to make friends with the owners’ cuddly donkeys and resident dog Luz.

Local attractions

Explore the rural charms of the Alentejo direct from the glampsite, with trails leading through fields full of seasonal sunflowers or into ancient cork forests. Left the bike at home? Rent one on site and head off into the hills. How about a day out on the water? Head to Lake Odivelas (20 minutes’ drive) for a paddle around the reservoir – the obliging owners will transport their canoes to the water’s edge for you. For a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean, Praia dos Buizinhos (an hour) is the nearest beach, tucked into a cove and safe for swimming. Windsurfers can try their luck on Costa de Santo André beach in Reserva Natural das Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha (an hour), where you might get lucky and spot rare red herons fishing in the marshes. If you’re with the kids or just don’t feel like driving very far, Ferreira do Alentejo (15 minutes) is a cute little town with an abundance of whitewashed churches to discover as well as terrace bars – one such bar handily overlooks the playground in the Jardim Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo so you can watch the kids let off steam as you sample a couple of local wines.
