  • Peaceful wildlife haven with a friendly atmosphere and tidy facilities
  • Access to walks and bike rides; walk to the river to fish or swim
  • Social activities on site such as barbecues and pizza evenings
How about friendly vibes 50 metres from the Mira river and a site that's surrounded by walks and cycling trails? If that all sounds like a bit of you, nab a spot at Camping Serro da Bica in the centre of southern Portugal. Since the new owners took charge of this site in 2018, the friendly atmosphere has been a top priority – much appreciated by new guests and regulars (families and dogs included). During the week, there’s an opportunity to catch up together in the log cabin. On the weekends, the site often throws a barbecue, a pizza evening or a trip to a local restaurant. On that note, there are several high-quality restaurants within five kilometres of the site (perhaps take a splendid stroll there and back, admiring the local wildlife as you go). Peace and space are the key characteristics at Camping Serro da Bica, as is the gorgeous natural setting. There are cork, holm oaks and seasonal plant life all around, and at the bottom of the site is a 50-metre path to the Mira river, where wild swimming and fishing are year-round activities. If you’re ready and raring to get out, walking routes start directly from the site, ranging in length from five to 15 kilometres. Cyclists can access several different cycling routes of different difficulties, as well as mountain biking nearby. It’s very neat here, despite being such a wildlife haven. There’s a toilet and shower block with underfloor heating, washing-up and laundry facilities and wifi covering the whole site. Plus, the grounds are easily accessible for those carrying any equipment with them. If you’re wondering about local amenities, you’ll be pleased to find that Ourique, 10 minutes’ drive away, has a large supermarket, several small shops, cafés and restaurants.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Near river & good pitch location

Disliked: Felt being English in the minority as mostly Dutch seem to stay here. There is a lot of traffic noise. Also was asked to pay by cash not card as campsite incurred changes, this was not mentioned when booking or at check in.

Electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: No

From the manager: There is always somebody available to help our guest if we are not there. We were also busy with some works, but still we had some good spots to stay. We are sorry we could not have the right solution for you.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: What was there not to like!? it is an incredible campsite that is secluded and well thought out pitch placing. You basically have your own plot of land. Our hosts are most welcoming and are very happy to advise on local hikes and activities. It is an 50min from Vilamoura and Albufera which keeps it peaceful and not so crowded. The beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the river and wildlife on your doorstep is incredible. There is a drought in Southern Portugal and Spain and we were asked to go sparingly on the water and this was not an issue as we all play a part. Will definitely return when in the area again and would most definitely recommend to anyone to visit for at least a long weekend or longer.

Electric gravel and hardstanding tent pitch

Liked: We came across this site when looking for a suitable stopover between the Algarve and Lisbon. Although we stayed only 2 nights we wished we had stayed for longer given the very friendly and relaxed vibe which Menno and Miranda have created. It is most definitely a site with a great personality! A highlight is when the 5 o’ clock bell is rung for happy hour at the bar and a chance to meet up and chat with fellow campers. We shall definitely return.

Disliked: We would like to see the site once the extensive planting the owners have carried out has had a chance to mature.

Local attractions

Compasses out… Camping Serro da Bica is well-based for adventures to the north, east, south and west. First, perhaps investigate the deserted Roman mine landscape at the Sao Domingos Mine (an hour and 10 minutes' drive) or the waterfalls in the Pulo do Lobo (an hour and 10 minutes) nature reserve, both to the east. Algarve beaches (an hour and 10 minutes) are to the south, with sandy islands, sea caves, cliffs, and scenic rock formations. Meanwhile, in the west, the Atlantic coast (around an hour and 10 minutes) has yet more impressive cliffs and splendid beaches that are certainly less crowded than the Algarve’s. In the north, day trip options include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Roman Evora (an hour and 45 minutes), medieval Alcácer do Sal (an hour and 10 minutes) and ancient ruins in Beja (50 minutes).
