  • Dog-friendly site on an olive grove with a vineyard and old trees
  • A 20-minute drive from Serpa and 45 from the Alqueva reservoir
  • Pool; snacks, barbecues, wine and other products available on site
What might you sink your teeth into at Monte das Louzeiras, near the Spanish border between Seville and Serpa? Wine, harvested by the site from the olive grove with 300-year-old trees and a vineyard… petisco (local snacks)… sunset drinks… a barbecue? In the way of scenery, there’s a set-up that’s just as tasty, with a 40-hectare olive grove in the Serra Adiça and animals like sheep, horses, dogs, cats, geese, chickens, peacocks and an ostrich on the farm. The hosts Ana Luisa, Marc and VIP resident Dunga the ostrich live on the farm. They produce wine in amphorae and oak barrels, but their store stocks more besides wine : olive oil, piri piri, honeys, cosmetic products made from olive oil, vinegars and flavoured salts and oils. It’s a family business with Swiss and Portuguese roots – and they’re very welcoming. There’s a good slice of nature at Monte das Louzeiras. In the garden, the hosts can provide breakfast, petisco or even a barbecue. There’s a spacious patio surrounded by orange-toned trees, where they’ll be happy to serve you their wines and other drinks at sunset too. The pool also has a terrace (how splendid). When it comes to wine-tasting, you’ve got two choices: olive oil and wine-tasting in the site’s adega or on the Alentejo Wine Route. For snacks, the choices are those served on site or a café in the little village of Vale de Vargo, 35 minutes’ walk away. Collect any groceries you need from the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away, and then make your way to Serpa, 20 minutes’ drive away. This small town has cultural events and museums, plus it’s considered to be the capital of Cante Alentejano, a UNESCO-listed traditional Portuguese music genre.

Liked: This site is so peaceful, the owners make you feel like family. Lots of peacocks walking around and even an Ostrich who lives with a horse. But the best thing is this the site is a vineyard and produce the best red and white wine I have had in a long time. They sometimes put on evening meals (there is a charge) really good value for money. You can help yourself to orange and lemons from the trees. We can away having made new friends with the owners and we will definitely be returning.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Liked: Really lovely owner & staff. Toilet & showers were modern & clean’ish. Lots of animals around which could be both like & dislike?!

Disliked: No proper pitches, just on grass between olive trees which became very slippery after rain. Sort of liked and disliked the many animals, the chickens caused a bit of a dirty shoe issue! No WiFi except in building. Nearest shop (tiny village shop) 30mins walk.

From the manager: Thanks for your suggestions. Your review is a bit incomprehensible, in our profile it is clearly written that it is a farm with pitches between the olive trees on grass-covered land. We understand that you were not happy that it rained during your stay. During this time, the other guests used our lounge with fireplace and felt very comfortable with a wine that was offered. We recommend for you a municipal parking space where you can stand one pitch away from chickens and other animals for a fee. We wish you a safe and enjoyable journey.

Liked: What an Oasis, so peacefully quiet and relaxing there were days when there were no mechanical noises bliss, yes there are cockerals and chickens and peacocks that’s all part of the charm, Mark and Anna Luisa are great host making us feel so welcome and part of the family, we had breakfast and wine tasting and were invited to join them for lunch with other campers and their Dutch friends which was great, in the evening you can sit by the log burner and Mark will offer you a glass of wine or two, don’t forget get Luna the friendly dog and lots of cats too, would I re visit “absolutely”

Disliked: Yes if can get muddy when wet, and you do have to dodge some of the chicken/peacock poo, the toilet facilities can be stretched when busy, no chemical disposal facilities which was not a problem for us as we have a SOG system.

From the manager: Thank you very much for the nice comment. We were very happy to have you both with us. We wish you a safe journey and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful and rustic site. Lots of family animals, which are lovely to see. Mark and Anna Louisa are so welcoming and friendly. Very hospitable hosts. Spent a lovely evening with them and another young family, tasting their delicious wine, olive oil, and bread. Would love to go back.

Disliked: Cockerels were an early alarm call!

Liked: Everything was amazing, starting with the warm Welcome from Marc and Ana Luisa when we arrived. The Farm is absolutely stunning, with plenty of animals, a nice pool, games for kids (Badminton, ...). The farm is very well maintained and it was done with a lot of taste. Marc and Ana Luisa organized a little barbecue with another family from the campground and we were able to do a wine tasting and eat incredible food from the area. It was so nice, that our kids cried when we left. So we promised them we will come back before the end of the year.

Disliked: Nothing. Everything perfect. We just scratched our Camper (7.50 long and 3.10 height) on the olive trees on the access road, but I'm sure Marc will do a cut to avoid this in the future. We were not the only ones.

From the manager: Dear Marlene & Patrick, Thank you for your stay with us. We will of course check your rating and see where we can improve. The low rating for the children must be a misunderstanding, you did not have your grandchildren with you and there were no children from other guests present. We wish you a pleasant stay in Portugal and a safe journey back.

Local attractions

Just because you’re in landlocked Beja doesn’t mean that there are no water activities… the Alqueva (45 minutes’ drive) is the largest dam in western Europe, and there’s more than one way to take in the landscape. Take to the water with a canoe, paddleboard or boat or cruise around the shore on walking and mountain biking trails past castles. Along the route is Luz (an hour), a village which originally sank beneath the dam before being relocated, and the medieval houses of Monsaraz (an hour and five minutes). The area around the lake is a popular patch for stargazers; in Alentejo, the stars are often very vivid. In the way of water, pretty Pulo do Lobo (50 minutes) – which means ‘wolf’s leap’ in Portuguese - is another gorgeous spot. On the river Guadiana, the gorge has the tallest waterfall in south Portugal. Take a picnic trek or grab a bite to eat in the local villages.
