  • Quiet and comfortable meadow site in central Portugal
  • 10 minutes to shops, eats and Roman ruins in Santiago da Guarda
  • An hour to Figueira da Foz beach and 25 minutes to castles and mosaics
What a spot. Splendid isolation in a forested valley, an hour away from sandy beaches. The folks behind Dolittle Holidays have worked hard to carve out a comfy niche for guests in this tiny hamlet in central Portugal: their small site is surrounded by vintage olive trees and gnarled oaks, and you’ll stay in meadows filled with wildflowers and a-flutter with butterflies. Spacious and secluded bell tents are the order of the day here, all with cool interiors with comfy beds and bedside tables, as well deckchairs for lounging outside. The former barn has become a pair of bathrooms, with sun-heated showers and electricity. Breakfasts are served on a shady terrace, which also houses a barbecue for guests to use. Inside the adega, where the farmer once made his wine, an honesty fridge is stocked with drinks and a swinging chair invites you to linger. An outdoor kitchen keeps self-caterers cool. The proprietors can you point you to forest paths that lead to the village of Poço dos Caés; a 20-minute walk to a pair of welcoming café-bars. Another route (an hour on foot, or 10 minutes’ drive) takes you to the windmill-crested heights of Outeiro, for views stretching down to the Atlantic.

Local attractions

The popular, but not over-stuffed, beach resort of Figueira da Foz is an hour’s drive away, a prime spot for walks and seafood as well as the more obvious swimming and sunbathing stuff. You can kayak your way down the Mondego river from here, and Gala (50 minutes) just down the coast is where the surfers go for their thrills. History buffs will have a fine time here, as the Leiria region of Portugal is packed with Roman remnants. Santiago da Guarda (10 minutes) and Rabaçal (20 minutes) both have super ruins and mosaics to mooch about, and the striking castle at Pombal (25 minutes) was a stronghold of the Knights Templar. Mountain fans can get to grips with the sea-facing precipices at Serra da Boa Viagem (an hour and 10 minutes) or for the real deal make the two and a half-hour trip to Manteigas, centre of the Serra da Estrela National Park. Dozens of trails run through this region of forested mountains and hidden lakes, a natural wonderland roamed by wolves and otters. If you don’t want to meet the wolves, then eat the cheese; the region is proud of its distinctive gooey sheep’s cheese made with thistles.
