  • Scenic rural pitches on a family-run old terraced olive farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Tomar; five minutes’ walk to Poço Redondo
  • Pool, fitness area, games room and bar; local produce for sale
On the edge of the peaceful, rural village of Poço Redondo near Santarém, Camping Redondo has spacious and shaded pitches dotted among eucalyptus and pine trees. With views over vineyards and olive groves, this relaxed site in central Portuguese countryside is both family run and family friendly. Much is taken care of for guests here: there's running water by the pitches, plus a shower block and a washing-up area. Thoughtful amenities for families with younger children include baby-changing facilities, launderette and drying room, and children can run around the playground near the orchard or jump on the climbing frame, seesaw and swing. Facilities for older kids include the fitness centre and games room, but it’s round the swimming pool that guests tend to congregate during day. The pool is overlooked by a terrace bar selling drinks, snacks and ice cream, and bands sometimes play there on summer evenings. Pick up barbecue supplies in Tomar’s daily food market (15 minutes' drive), or source fresh bread and local goodies (wines, olive oil, free-range eggs, seasonal fruit and veg) at reception, where a few groceries are also sold. And if you’d like to learn more about local produce and culture, the owners can organise wine-tasting sessions or excursions to traditional fado concerts and colourful festivals in high season. Sporty types have plenty to occupy them too, with bike hire in the village (a five-minute walk) and direct access to hiking trails from the site. Gentler family pursuits include fishing on the Zézere river, or swimming and canoeing on Castelo do Bode lake (both 30 minutes away).

Local attractions

The gorgeous city of Tomar (15 minutes’ drive) is steeped in medieval history and packed with ancient buildings. Must-visit sights include the Convent of Christ, on a steep hill overlooking the town, and the 16th-century Pegões Aqueduct. After your climb, put your feet up in a Praça da Republica café for some much-needed R&R… and possibly a glass of chilled white wine? Several famous churches should also be on the to-do list. Big-hitters include the truly spectacular Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima (35 minutes) and Batalha Monastery (45 minutes). The university city of Coimbra (an hour) has much to keep you happy too, from history museums to botanical gardens. For a complete change of pace, head to the beach at Nazaré (an hour and five minutes) on the Silver Coast. Renowned for its world-beating Atlantic rollers, it’s also a haven for surfers. The oceanside town of São Pedro de Moel and sheltered São Martinho do Porto bay (both an hour and 15 minutes) are also well worth a peek.

Liked: Above everything else our host and owner, Linda. She is an angel. She looked after us above and beyond. Nice swimming pool, ability to launder clothes, and lovely position in the orchard.

Disliked: Nothing
