  • Motorhome pitches on a hillside wine estate in Arcos de Valdevez
  • A 55-minute drive to Braga; 15 minutes to Miradouro do Monte Vascões
  • Vineyard tours, wine tasting and organic food available on site
Wine and walking – what an excellent mix for a holiday. The tree-shaded motorhome pitches at hilly Quinta de Santa Marinha wine estate make a great base for such things, as they are close to the start of the riverside Ecovia do Rio Vez hiking trail. This tiny site only has a few pitches, all with spectacular views over the vineyard and surrounding Arcos de Valdevez countryside near Viana do Castelo. This is not a dedicated campsite as such, but a small park within a wine estate with a few pitches for self-contained motorhomes only (please note tents are not accepted). Simple amenities are provided – electric hook-ups as well as wooden compost loos and a wifi connection – but the real plus points at this secluded spot are the wine-tasting sessions and the organic treats cooked up by the resident chef and owner. If you fancy sampling some fine regional Chardonnay white or red Merlot wines (a fee applies), please reserve your wine-tasting session at least 24 hours in advance. Likewise there is a charge for tasty breakfasts and dinners created from specialities made in house, including pastries and charcuterie – again please order your food 24 hours ahead of time. There’s also a small grocery store on site if you're going down the self-catering route. Tours of the vineyard are offered too; often accompanied by resident canine Koky. You are welcome to bring your own dogs to join in the fun.

Liked: This Quinta is a really lovely location and very beautiful. The Quinta has all the facilities that are needed for a short stay in a campervan. There is an eco toilet and shower room with hot water in a newly built wooden block next to the pitches. Electricity extra but not needed by us for one night. Antonio is a great host and we had a most enjoyable wine tasting of his nice wines (we bought a case). We also had a fantastic evening meal cooked by Antonio… Javalli casserole with starters and home grown fruit. Antonio grows his own amazing vegetables and fruits.. the myriad types of tomatoes grown are incredible! This is a great set-up for a relaxing stay with views to die for! Highly recommended

Disliked: Nothing for us…. Just right all round

From the manager: E melhor aprender a ler, do que te queixas esta bem descriminado na plateforma. E muita gente vem aqui para isso. Madrid no mundo rural não existe. Eu não me queixo das asneiras que me fisestes. Luz etc. Antonio

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The hosts are lovely people, and their wine tasting and meal offer is the reason to go. The pitch also has lovely views over the valley

Disliked: The ground is soft and dusty. Sprinklers randomly go off and wet everything. The electricity cost us 25 euros for two nights. There are no waste facilities, we were even asked to take our own rubbish away. A lot of flies and a windmill that is noisy all night if the wind blows. There is little to do near the site. the swimming pool is out of bounds to campers, it's only for the hotel guests, annoying when there are no showers, it's 34 degrees, dusty and the pool is in front of you and empty! WiFi is available, but didn't work from our pitch

Liked: Great hosts, lovely home cooked and produced food. Lovely views over the vineyard to the mountains beyond.

Local attractions

As well as walking the Ecovia do Rio Vez hiking trail, you can potter about in the hills, discovering sights including the Medieval Bridge of Vilela (10 minutes’ drive) and the Cascata das Lages Altas waterfall (half an hour) as well as viewpoints like the Miradouro do Monte Vascões (15 minutes). If you fancy a day out in the big city, the lovely and historic city of Braga (55 minutes) offers a 12th-century cathedral, a slew of museums and some lovely Baroque-era architecture. The ornate Bom Jesus Sanctuary in Tenões (an hour) is approached by a monumental stone staircase (or you can cheat and take the funicular to the top of the hill) – either way your reward is fabulous views over Braga from the top. Another pretty spot is Viana do Castelo (45 minutes), where you might like to shop for gold filigree jewellery, follow a walking route around architectural styles from Renaissance to Art Deco, or swim and jetski in the Atlantic Ocean from sandy beaches.
