If work’s getting you down and you’re in need of a bit of self-care, L.Stile Glamping – a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the famed resort town of Portorož – will take you from the daily grind to holidaying in style in less time than it takes you to unpack at the yurt. Less than 10 minutes from the Adriatic coast, stays in this part of the Slovene Riviera come with splendid views over the Gulf of Trieste, and getting out and about to explore is an absolute must. Bring along a bike or commit to some decent walking shoes and set out to explore the 130 kilometres of the Parenzana railway linking Trieste and Poreč (pick it up in Portorož), or opt for sandy days and beach umbrellas in the resort town. Cool off after lengthy days afoot or in the saddle with a dip in the pool back at L.Stile, then laze around in a hammock on the leafy site. Wake from afternoon naps to challenge your companions or other guests to a highly competitive game of ping pong, then revert to leisurely states by soaking up the view from the shared terrace. Get a taste of nature by foraging for dinner and snacks (it’s still foraging if you’re encouraged to help yourself to organic fruit and veg growing on site, right?), then settle in for peaceful nights by the firepit or – if a little cosiness feels right – stargazing beneath the central dome of the yurt.

Local attractions

Start explores hereabouts with a day or so in Portorož, five minutes’ drive away – it’s more than Mediterranean beaches (not that anyone needs more than that), so wander along to the thermal baths, the casino or the Rolling Stones museum for a little satisfaction. You can’t always get what you want though… If Portorož has created mixed emotions, saunter along the coast as far as the port city of Piran (15 minutes) where there are more casinos to test luck, as well as museums, some spectacular seventh-century walls and local eateries around Tartini Square. Slovenia may not leap to mind when thinking of winemaking powerhouses, but travel the 20 minutes to Koper to put that to the test. Post-wine tasting, stick around for a stunning Gothic-style palace, a waterpark and more museums, then get a feel for local industry at the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park saltpans 10 minutes from base. For those tiring of Slovenian outings, the Italian border is just 20 minutes’ drive away – cross over for visits to the pretty port town of Muggia and the Venice-esque Trieste within half an hour. As a bonus? Venice itself is just a little over two hours away...
