  • Surrounded by vineyards five minutes' drive from Lambert's Bay
  • Five minutes' drive from the beach and Bird Island Nature Reserve
  • Swimming pool, bar, fishing river and braai areas
Vineyards in one direction, a gorgeous white sand beach in the other… yes, it’s all rather heavenly for folk staying at Western Cape site Xamarin Guest Farm. Packing up and getting to this little slice of gorgeousness is a cinch, as it’s just off the R364 main road. There’s no need to load up with a car full of food before you set off either, as the town of Lambert’s Bay is five minutes’ drive away for seafront dining or supermarket supplies to chuck on the braai on site (an essential part of any fresh-air break around these parts, surely). This part of the world was once the preserve of wild beasts, and it’s possible that you’ll still see wildlife roaming in the surrounding hills and plains if you head out for a walk. Your more immediate neighbours will, however, be those many, many rows of vines that produce the grapes that go on to become Sir Lambert’s wines. It’d be something of a torture to have all those vines so close by and yet not be able to have a drink, so it’s good news that’s there’s a bar on site to sort out such things. The beach is a few minutes’ drive away (next to the town and stretching forth for many a kilometres), and there are dips to be had closer to base in the site’s splash pool. Fishing, for folk who fancy it, is in the little river that runs through the estate.

Local attractions

‘The diamond of the west coast’ they once called it, and Lambert’s Bay is still a bit of a gem if you’re into long beaches, seafood dinners and wildlife spotting. A big draw is the excellent Bird Island Nature Reserve, a mighty popular hangout for all manner of birdlife including cormorants, gannets and African penguins (plus the twitchers that come along to take tours or watch the action from the hides). If it’s bigger beasts that get your attention, sign up for a wildlife cruise from the town’s harbour – depending on the time of year you might catch sight of dolphins, seals and/or whales. The beaches along this stretch of coast are pretty spectacular too, with surfing, sandboarding and quad biking tours all to be had for active types. And… the wine? If being surrounded by grapes has given you the urge to get out and sample a few, there are several wineries within an hour’s drive (and wine tasting tours running from Lambert’s Bay to save you the bother of driving).
