  • On-site bar and restaurant for mealtimes and takeaway snacks
Roaming the Sierra y Cañones de Guara mountains and ravines comes high on the agenda with a stay at Camping Guara Altaoja in Huesca, just on the outskirts of a protected natural park – and canyoning is the top pick when it comes to explores. Not up for canyoning? With the gorgeous views of the surroundings from the site, perhaps instead you'll be itching to get stuck into all the hiking, climbing, cycling and kayaking in the surrounds… The Guara Altaoja team know adventuring is hungry (and thirsty) work, so a bar and restaurant are on base to keep your energy levels up. Tuck into breakfasts, lunches and dinners on the terrace or grab snacks to go (ice cream, anyone?). If you’re inspired to rustle up your own eats, barbecues are permitted; eat your grilled grub out on the grass and under the fruit trees with your four-legged pal right next to you at this dog-friendly place. As the site has no roads, noise is minimal at this serene spot. Practical stuff on site includes showers, toilets and a washing-up area. And the free wifi comes in handy when you want to share your snaps of the photogenic canyons taken on jaunts mountain biking, driving or horse riding across the lush landscape.

Local attractions

Hop it to the Salto De Bierge waterfall (a 10-minute drive) for a pretty panorama, or soak up scenes that are just as epic by zipping between the various canyons in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, including the particularly spectacular Peonera Inferior ravine (15 minutes). Another Instagrammable spot is the wide-arched Puente de Villacantal bridge (40 minutes), sandwiched between a couple of towering crags. If such sights have you craving an interactive expedition, drive to Rodellar for some top-notch rock climbing. Alternatively, for something a little more cruisey, set off for the Somontano wine region and imbibe a few glasses of Spanish vino after a tour of the vineyards dotted across this stunning part of the country (both 35 minutes). The same distance away is the Collegiate of Alquézar church, sitting on top of a hillside sprinkled with honey-coloured houses; head here to lend your trip a historical slant, then cram in more culture at the gothic Huesca Cathedral (45 minutes). A trip to the Castle of Loarre and its abbey, an hour away, lands visitors at one of oldest castles in Spain. Set your eyes skywards with a visit to the Planetario de Aragon planetarium (50 minutes) or finish off your hol back outdoors with a gander at the green-coloured water of the huge Embalse de Vadiello dam (also 50 minutes).
