  • Rural campsite within walking distance of Loarre's castle
  • Close to a riding centre and the mountains of Sierra de Loarre
  • Covered stone barbecues, restaurant and supermarket
It's a splendid thing indeed to be within strolling distance of a Spanish castle – and the oldest fortified one in all the country too. Camping Castillo De Loarre in northern Spain's Aragon region is halfway between the village of Loarre and Loarre Castle, the old pile built in the 12th and 13th centuries between Christian and Muslim land. The castle is the area's main attraction, but outdoor activity fans will have heaps to try around here too, such as lessons from the horse riding centre close by and its guided excursions into the Sierra de Loarre for experienced riders. Loarre's also a centre for adventure sports including paragliding, climbing, canoeing and whitewater rafting, and has good trails for hiking and mountain biking nearby. As befits its nearby castle, Camping Castillo De Loarre has a ye olde (but mega well-maintained) look, like at its comely covered stone barbecues and the stone setting of the water fountains. There's also some old-fashioned fun for kids in the barrel playhouse, although grownups may (sadly) not fit. Castillo De Loarre is about 30 kilometres from the ancient sights of Huesca, the Aragon city founded in the first century BC. It has a good range of up to date facilities, including a pool and a playground, a TV room and a games room. There's also good-sized restaurant and a well-stocked shop selling local produce: barbecues are allowed and gas cylinders are sold on site.

Local attractions

Loarre Castle about a kilometre from the site was once a mighty important stronghold between Christian and Muslim Spain. There's still a good bit of it to see these days – and if you've seen Ridley Scott's 2013 film Kingdom of Heaven, you'll likely recognise its scenic setting on top of the Sierra de Loarre. More old piles of the must-see sort are 30 kilometres away in Huesca, including the 13th-century Huesca Cathedral and the 12th-century Monastery of San Pedro el Viejo, the oldest Romanesque building on the Iberian peninsula. About an hour north of Loarre, the old city of Jaca on the French border was once the capital of Aragon: drive up here to see its medieval walls, 11th-century cathedral and its 16th-century citadel, now home to a colony of rock sparrows. If you prefer to be active rather than historical, horse riding is within a couple of hundred metres of the site, paragliding 750 metres away, and whitewater rafting on the Gallégo river reachable in 10 kilometres. More peacefully, you could also drink your merry way around the Somontano Wine Route, one of 13 official wine routes in Spain.
