Surfing at Somo? Or how about windsurfing, sailing or fishing? Have the whole heap with a stay at Camping Somoparque in Ribamontán al Mar, a simple kilometre and a half from the sands and sea of this Cantabrian seaside spot so famed for its breaks that it's a designated Spanish World Surfing Reserve. A stay here will also have you well placed for explores of Cabárceno Wildlife Park, the nature reserve 20 kilometres from base, set on 750 hectares of an old mine and home to many endangered species such as African elephants and white rhinos. Camping Somoparque has a playground, a toilet and shower block and a washing-up corner. Guests can also order fresh bread every day and use the wifi hotspot – perhaps to surf some info on Somo surfing…?

Local attractions

The fab seaside town of Somo, a kilometre and a half from Camping Somoparque, is a topping destination for Spanish surf all year round from its wide golden beach, as well as for other watersports like sailing and windsurfing – or you could just snooze the afternoon away with a siesta on its beach…? Take the ferry across the bay from Somo to reach Cantabrian capital Santander, the spectacular city filled with sights such as the swish villas of the Avenida de la Reina Victoria, the 'Beer Plaza' of San Fernando and the UNESCO-listed cave art and medieval kingdom of Asturias of the Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueología de Cantabria, all under the nineteenth century Mercado del Este and all very much a must-see. For a quieter vibe, have a day at Cabárceno Wildlife Park, 20 kilometres away, home to over a hundred animal species from five continents all roaming wild. The reserve also has a reptile house, restaurants, a play park, botany routes and picnic areas.
