  • Glamping tents 10 minutes' walk from the beach in Somo
  • A 15-minute ferry ride from central Santander
  • Swimming pool, playground and bar-restaurant on site
If you’re in the market for a mix of lazy seaside days and livelier city wanders, Kampaoh Somo Playa makes a great choice for your Cantabria holiday. This well-equipped glamping site in the seaside town of Somo is only a short stroll from Loredo beach, a fabulous long and wide stretch of sand that’s just the place for slow-paced days of swims and sunbathing. There are plenty more beaches within a short drive too, so could spend your break bouncing around between the various patches of sand – but when you do want a change of scenery, you can simply hop on the ferry for the 15-minute ride to Santander for some time spent exploring the historic attractions and finding places to eat. Life here is designed to be easy, with furnished tents tucked away among the trees to keep them cool. Each one has beds made up ready for guests’ arrival, and a night-watch service keeps the place safe and secure. Shared facilities include a launderette and well-equipped bathrooms with accessible facilities and baby bathrooms. Wandering down to the beach will only take you about 10 minutes (along a shaded woodland path) but you don’t even have to go that far if you don’t feel like it as there’s an outdoor swimming pool on site for even more convenient dips. A playground and bar-restaurant are on hand too, and there are several more places to eat in town, within about 20 minutes’ walk.

Local attractions

It's very much worth taking the ferry (15 minutes) across to Santander – probably several times, as there's plenty to see and do over there. In the city centre, the Maritime Museum, cathedral and Centro Botín contemporary art museum are among the top places to visit. After that, take a walk out on the peninsula to the grand Magdalena Palace before heading back to pick up food from at Mercado de la Esperanza or finding a harbourside restaurant serving up some of the seafood that Santander's known for. If you'd prefer your walks to have rural scenery, plot of course for Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno (25 minutes' drive), where animals from around the globe roam around a 750-hectare former open-pit mining area. The Alto de Fuente Las Varas hike (half an hour) is another scenic choice, or you may like to see the underground views at Cave of El Castillo or Cueva El Pendo (both half an hour). More beach time instead? Playa de Langre, Playa de Galizano and Playa de Antuerta are among your sandy options within a 20-minute drive.
