Be still, be calm, take a deep breath, and relax… everything at The Meditation Lodge Retreat has been set up to make stays as peaceful as possible for guests. The main building’s often used for meditation and mindfulness breaks, but those staying in the outdoor areas aren’t under any obligation to take a vow of silence or any such thing (good news for folk with chatty kids or enthusiastic dogs in tow). Daily morning yoga classes out in the garden, massages, reflexology sessions and hot tub soaks are all available to book (for an extra charge) to aid your passage into proper laidback holiday mode, and you may also find that swims in the open-air pool and gentle games of pétanque continue that good work. The concept of a relaxing holiday means different things to different folk, of course – some will want to fill their days out in the splendid surrounds of this Alicante area site, hiking or biking along rural paths or up into the mountains; others will want to hit the beach at Playa Muchavista with a drive of around 15 minutes. And if what you really need is a cold beer? There’s a local bar within strolling distance, and a choice of places to eat and drink in Busot, 45 minutes away on foot. To max the relaxing, you might of course prefer to stay put – source supermarket supplies 10 minutes’ drive away in Muxtamel (or at Alicante’s main food market) and settle in for meals on site, using the outdoor kitchen facilities or lighting up a barbecue.

Local attractions

A good hike or bike ride, with lots of fresh air and scenic views – that’s surely going to up the laidback holiday vibes... Perhaps a scenic wander from the village of Aigües (20 minutes’ drive), a waterfall hike from Tibi (half an hour) or clambering up to the castle of Castalla (35 minutes)? The scenery’s not just spectacular above ground either, so make time to delve underground at the Caves of Canalobre (10 minutes) to see how geology mixes with music and colourful lights. Stop off for a sugar hit to spur you along the way at the Turrón Museum (15 minutes); if you’ve not got a sweet tooth, perhaps the tuneful exhibits of Busot’s ethnic music museum (10 minutes) will be more your style. Time for sea air and/or city time? Head towards Alicante (25 minutes) for arty wanders around the contemporary art museum (home to works by Picasso, Dalí and Miró, among others), city views from Santa Bárbara Castle and foodie pickings at the 1920s central market, all followed by seaside strolls or some time on the sands.
