Fancy hanging out on a Costa Blanca finca where the accommodation comes with both gorgeous views and lots of creature comforts? The giant safari tents at Finca Les Coves all have proper beds and private showers, and sit on an 80-hectare estate in mountainous countryside 40 minutes' drive north of Alicante. While you stay here, the land is yours to explore as you see fit (bring the dog too) – follow your nose and get lost among the forest and wild herbs. Around the site there’s a swimming pool overlooked by a pink honesty bar stocked with juices and tapas bites – just write down what you’ve taken and pay up at the end of your stay. Don’t feel like cooking? Delicious dinners are served by the bar on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings (for an extra cost). The eco-credentials are pretty good around here too. Everything is solar powered, the vegetables and fruit used in the cooking comes from the finca garden and no food is wasted, as everything that’s left over goes to the pigs. How you spend your time here is you to you. Relax at the poolside with a good book in one hand and an ice-cold mojito in the other, ease your wanderlust by exploring Costa Blanca towns and villages, or head to the beach to catch some rays. Explore on foot, horseback or bike, go paragliding, practise yoga… the choice is yours.

Local attractions

Walkers can take wanders several waymarked circular routes around the finca’s hectares, and serious hikers and cyclists have the whole of La Carrasqueta mountain range to explore. Expert rider? You can gallop over the Spanish campo on horseback from a nearby riding centre (half an hour’s drive), while pony novices take a lesson in the ring. Cool off in the pool at the finca or go wild swimming under the waterfall at El Salt (40 minutes); if you prefer the feeling of sand between your toes, the beach of El Campello (half an hour) is safe for swimming, with lots of night-time action in the seafront bars and cafés as well. For a more sedate day at the seaside, quiet Cala Coveta Fuma and Cala D’Enmig (both 35 minutes) are small bays that are good for snorkelling from pebble beaches – take a packed lunch and a couple of chilled beers with you as there are few bars or restaurants. And if you need a bit of big-city inspiration, check out the Moorish architecture of the mighty hilltop Castillo de Santa Barbara in Alicante (40 minutes) or tour the winding streets of the Santa Cruz area before retiring to a cosy bar on lively Passeig Esplanada d’Espanya and grazing on tapas.
