  • Peaceful eco-friendly site in Valencia, a 15-minute drive from Buñol

Fond of tomatoes? Very near this fab site in Valencia the streets run red with them once a year. If you’ve heard of Buñol, it might well be because of the Tomatina, an annual food fight where over a hundred tonnes of toms are hurled about the streets in a good-natured frenzy. This puree apocalypse takes place about 15 minutes' drive from Pachamama Ecocamping, making it fairly easy to get back to normality in your tomato-drenched togs… Founded and run by a group of idealistic pals, this site in rural Spain has been set up to offer comfortable stays with minimum impact on the environment. The power comes from solar panels and wind turbines, the gardens and trees are cared for only with organic methods and the whole place is scented with native plants and shaded by ancient olive trees. Facilities are simple but clean and commodious: plentiful hot showers in bright and well-kept, wheelchair-accessible washrooms, where even the soap at the sinks is eco-friendly. The friendly team at Pachamama Ecocamping are very happy to help with local information or arrange excursions around a region bursting with castles and caves, vineyards and valley walks.

Local attractions

When not under a blanket of pulped tomatoes, Buñol is big on shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants; inside the castle there’s a town museum and trails out towards the natural bridge for cracking vistas of the surrounding region. If you’ve got your hiking head on, you can carry on from the bridge towards the much-loved Turche cave, beside a peaceful little lake and home to a 60-foot waterfall. The Pachamama team can point you in the right direction for other local walks, beside rivers, along ridges, to Alta cave and via the Route of the Alborache Mills, and to nearby activities like lake watersports at Dos Aguas, 40 minutes' drive away. It’s half an hour to the Forata reservoir for fishing and walks through the surrounding hills; a bigger option is the Sierra Martès (50 minutes’ drive), a full-on hike through wild scenery up to the tops of this mini mountain range (dropoffs and pickups can be arranged at the site). For thrills of a different kind, the chutes and winding slides of Aquopolis waterpark are 50 minutes away; motor another 10 minutes beyond that to be by the sea, for sunning on the sands or walking the cliffs of Cullera and its cape. Or zip along to Circuit Ricardo Tormo (35 minutes), host of the MotoGP Valencian Community Grand Prix and a test track frequently used by Formula One teams.

Rental tent (pet friendly)

Liked: We had an enjoyable stay. The guys were very friendly and offered coffee in the morning and explained how the eco site worked, what we can and can't do. The site was nice and toilets and showers were very clean and good. It is also in a nice area and had a lovely walk. Our tent was clean and dog friendly. The shared kitchen was also very good and very clean. Only downsite to the place was a lot of tlc needed on the actual pitches and vans.

Electric optional earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Przyjazna obsługa, dostęp do wyposażonej kuchni, w której można przygotować posiłek. We wspólnej przestrzeni sporo stolików do siedzenia, jedzenia, rozmów etc. Dostępne są również grille i niewielki basen. W łazience prysznice z eko kosmetykami i ciepłą wodą.
