Ever been to Extremadura? It's a mighty fine place for Roman around, as it's filled with ruins from the times of toga – and with nature reserves, forests, mountains and lakes in a green and ancient land. Come, see (and conquer) it all at Camping Bungalows Roma, a family-run campsite in the region that's in a handy spot to use as a base for Extremadura highlights like capital Mérida, Cáceres and Trujillo, and the teeny remote hamlets and crumbling hilltop castles dotting the surroundings. Roma has an outdoor pool, surrounded by a spacious garden for relaxing, sunbathing or having a game of volleyball or badminton; a tennis court, a football pitch and a playground and a TV room. Amenities include a laundry room with washing machines, a washing-up area and facilities blocks with free hot showers. Forget about sorting your own supper here too: the restaurant serves up dishes from the region for your dinners and suppers: that's all mighty fine too.

Local attractions

Apart from all the Roman ruins, the nature reserves and the handsome historic villages, the Extremadura region around Camping Bungalows Roma is one to get stuck into if you're feeling active: kayaking and canoeing, hiking, cycling, horse riding and skiing are all available around the nearby Sierra de Béjar and Monfragüe's national park. Many scenic and peaceful days out are within a short drive, such as around the small medieval village and Jewish quarter of Barrio Judío de Hervás, or the ancient walled town of Granadilla, one of Spain's historic-artistic towns. Get Roman around those ruins at province capital Mérida, Cáceres and Trujillo, or make like you were there at the time with an immersion in the Roman baths of Montemayor.
