You'll surely like this Swedish site. Camping Hultsfred is a peaceful and dog-friendly place on Lake Hulingen, set among a spectacular walking area in Sweden's Småland province – and with a lake swimming area, canoe and kayak hire and a dog-friendly lakeside beach to keep tails wagging all around. The lake covers almost 700 hectares and is a top spot for landing large pike and carp as well as other slippery species such as perch and roach. It's prime birdwatching land too, with about 250 spottable species and a bird sanctuary to the lake's south. The site is 25 minutes' drive from the traditional Swedish town of Vimmerby and within easy reach of outdoor days around the Stora Hammarsjön forest area (and its 25 lakes) and the Norra Kvill national park. The coast and the shoreside town of Västervik are just over an hour to the east. Facilities on site include a play area and a café; there's also a communal kitchen with ovens, a microwave, crockery, cutlery and sinks, and a common room with a kitchenette, toys and books. Bed linen and barbecues are available to rent.

Local attractions

Five kilometres from Camping Hultsfred is Järnudde, a bird protection area you can access on foot direct from the site's car park. Spot moose along the walk, as well as cranes, eagles and other feathered species from the bird tower. For hiking, visit the Stora Hammarsjön forest area 25 minutes' drive away to explore the shores of its 25 lakes, or take a trip out to Norra Kvill national park (45 minutes) and its four-kilometre hiking trail through dense coniferous forest: head up Idhöjden mountain to its highest point (230 metres above sea level) for spectacular views out over the lake. Days out with a difference include Målilla Elchpark (25 minutes) to feed elk, or panning for gold in the Emån stream in Ädelfors, 45 minutes away. There's also Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby (25 minutes), a theatre and adventure park based on the writer's characters, and Nils Holgersson World (30 minutes), a family park in miniature with amusements based on Sweden around 1900.
