A whole lot of lakeside lolling, sauna steaming and woodland wanders are what’s on the cards with a hol at Swecamp Bomstadbaden, a resort that lies between Sweden’s largest lake and apine forest in the country’s central region of Svealand. Spectacular Lake Vänern is a bit of an anglers’ paradise: book fishing excursions with the site's affable and qualified skipper to catch pike, perch, salmon and trout. The lake’s beach provides a splendid lounging and playing spot too, and if you fancy trying your hand at a few watery pursuits, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and pedalos are available to rent on site. Fancy a pamper? This is very much a thing here too, with the option of renting out a mini spa all to your good self – bubble away in the hot tub or steam the day away in the sauna... And be sure to stock up the mini fridge with your own snacks and drinks before you start spa-ing: it’s also got a comfy lounge to kick back in with a tipple or two while you watch what’s on the box or listen to your fave music from the handy little docking station. For food, the restaurant’s strategic beach location gives grand views out over the lake: reasonably priced lunches are served daily, and there are plenty of tasty options at dinnertime. Snacks such as sweets and ice cream can be picked up at reception, as can fresh breads every morning. For procuring a wider range of supplies off site, you can catch a bus from right outside the park to the local town of Karlstad.

Local attractions

This place is primed for outdoorsy peeps: there's a good jogging track two kilometres from base (extra enthusiastic runners can hotfoot it over there), and three golf courses lie within 18 kilometres of the park. For something more sedentary, shop til you drop in close by Karlstad and its huge mall, or soak up a spot of culture at the exhibits of Sandgrund Lars Lerin art gallery. The outdoor baths at Kroppkärrsbadet are also a swell place to relax at: there's a beach and a manicured lawn to laze on, plus a small pier to promenade along; bring some burgers and make a day of it too, because there's also a barbecue area for alfresco family grill ups. There's lots for littlies to do around Bomstadbaden's locale: take them to a soft play centre or Sundstabadet waterpark, both around 12 kilometres away; older ones and grownups alike will have fun at the paintballing centre, an easy eight kilometres away.
