  • Big rig-friendly park four miles from downtown St. Augustine
  • Six miles from the beach
  • Wifi throughout, pet park and community campfire
It's all new and improved at Compass RV Park near St Augustine in Florida: the owners have taken over from the site's previous life as Indian Forest Campground – and are making it their mission that facilities and services here travel in a dazzling new direction (up, mainly). You might reckon that the park setting is a splendid place to start in any case, for its locale two miles from I-95 is four miles from downtown St. Augustine (probably the oldest city in all the US of A, history fans) and a mere six miles from sandy Florida beaches. You can ditch the wheels on arrival too: a shuttle trolley service is available when you buy a discounted trolley ticket. On site are roomy and fully-serviced pitches for all sizes of unit, each with its own firepit area. There's also a handsome pond, plenty of room to run around and a fenced pet park where you can let your pooch off the lead to play. Amenities include clean air-conditioned bathhouses, a new air-conditioned laundry facility and cable TV with 36 channels. Guests can gather around the community campfire with live music on holiday weekends and Saturday nights in season.

Local attractions

St. Augustine is a splendid city, the oldest continuously occupied settlement established by those venturing Europeans in all of the continental United States. It was founded by the Spanish in the late 15th century and stayed in Spanish hands until 1819. Recommend St. Augustine sightseeing includes the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum for spectacular views of northeast Florida, artefacts recovered from vessels, and information on centuries of history from in and around the area; the  Spanish Military Hospital Museum; the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse and the St. Augustine Wild Reserve, a seven-acre animal centre with tigers, cougars, lynxes, leopards, wolves and more. Four miles of beach, a tidal marsh and wildlife galore are at the 1,600 acres of the Anastasia State Park, along with a self-guided nature trail through the maritime hammock to the ancient sand dunes. You can also visit the Spanish Coquina Quarries, an archaeological site where coquina rock was mined to help construct the nearby Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, now on the National Register of Historic Places. For golf, try the 18-hole course at St. Johns Golf and Country Club between St. Augustine and Jacksonville.
