Eight kilometres of golden sandy beach and a setting just a few minutes' stroll from the town of Barbatre... and thus onto the famed and spectacular isle of Noirmoutier: sound good as a Vendée starter? Make your island home on the eco-friendly family park of Sandaya Domaine Le Midi. Natch you'll have heard of Noirmoutier (and if not, now's the time to learn, book and go): this famed and scenic isle is in the Atlantic Ocean between Brittany and France's south west, and made up of spectacular beaches, pretty pine forests and walking/cycling trails to keep one busy for quite some time. (Noirmoutier oyster and shellfish are oh so much worth checking out too.) And back, nearby, at base? Domaine Le Midi is bordered by dunes and those aforementioned eight kilometres of golden sandy beach for sandy days aplenty, in a handsome area of beach and forest near the Passage du Gois. The site owners take pride in their eco-friendly approach and their excellent facilities for sporty sorts, sailors, and sun lounger seekers: whatever your holiday bent, you can have it here. Active options include an indoor and outdoor pool, two playgrounds; a fitness room; a tennis court; a sports ground; a miniature golf course and ping pong tables. If even reading that has made you feel faint, the outdoor pool has comfy space alongside for hours' worth of lazing, and there's stacks of room around for you to find your own peaceful place (and a restaurant and takeaway to hand for hassle-free eats). Also on offer is a lively entertainment and activities programme for all ages, where you and yours can join in with the likes of aqua gym, fitness classes, Zumba, step classes, sports tournaments and boules; there's also a kids' club with games, arts and crafts.

Rutevejledning

By car: The island of Noirmoutier is about 80 kilometres from Nantes and can be reached by a toll-free bridge or via the Passage du Gois (which can only be crossed during low tide). Continue on the D38 up to Barbâtre and follow the signs for the campsite. By bus: A bus service, provided by the SNCF (French Railways), runs between Nantes train station and Noirmoutier bus station.

Lokale seværdigheder

Around 80 kilometres of cycle routes and 64 kilometres of walking trails connect the north and south of Noirmoutier, past pretty picturesque villages, wild coastline and wide beaches. The island's also a nature reserve, known for its birdwatching, and a place of traditional culture and farming methods such as salt extraction and oyster and shellfish farming; have a day around 12th-century Château de Noirmoutier and its museum for more info on the island and its heritage. It's a short stroll of 650 metres or so from the site to the lively tourist town of Barbatre, the closest commune to the Passage du Gois leading from mainland France to Noirmoutier. A 10-minute drive north from Barbatre is the island's main town of Noirmoutier-en-Ille, where a morning market runs four days a week. Sailing schools and boat trips are easily accessible nearby: ask the site team for details.
