Fond of a getaway to the countryside? So are most of the guests at Vakantiepark Bronckhorst, for this quiet, dog-friendly holiday park is set in the Achterhoek, a lush, green area in east Gelderland in the East Netherlands. In the Achterhoek, expect miles and miles of hikes and cycling trails, past centuries-old churches, meadows, cows, forests, rivers and many other stunning countryside scenes. If you feel sleepy after all of the time spent walking or cycling, it's a good job that this holiday park is in a peaceful setting in the countryside. Still, kids will not run short of things to do on site, as there are play areas in the fields, a trampoline and an outdoor pool with a separate kids’ pool. Sunbeds are scattered around the pool for the adults who want to kick back and leaf through their latest page-turner too. When you’re ready to get out and about, take your pick from the local walking or cycling trails or drive the short distance to one of the local towns, many of which with traditional old buildings and friendly restaurants. There are shops and restaurants in HengeloLa, five minutes’ drive away, or in Ruurlo, 10 minutes’ drive away. Ruurlo Castle houses gorgeous contemporary art, including pieces by the Dutch painter Carel Willink.

Whether you go by car or bicycle, stop off at one of the local historic sites on your adventures. De Wiersse Castle Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) has 28 acres of gardens and 74 acres of landscaped park, surrounding a manor house. Perhaps you want to scout out new pastures for your next hike or bicycle ride. For this, Nationaal Park Veluwezoom (half an hour) is a great contender and the oldest national park in the Netherlands. It has sand drifts, hills and forests with farms and country houses. The Posbank has stunning views over the whole national park, as long as you don’t mind a 90-metre climb. Arnhem (45 minutes), just south, has a famed fashion district if you fancy a day of hiking followed by shopping. You may know a little about the popular Zutphen (20 minutes) already, but if not, don’t worry, as there are plenty of museums in the small city that will tell you about its history. Hire an electric boat to glide down the river Berkel and canals. In Zutphense Museumhaven, your boat should seem state-of-the-art compared to the city’s old ships.
