CLOSED FOR 2020. Whatever your priorities when staying at a farm site – getting bach to basics by stargazing at the low light pollution clear skies, daygazing at hill views or meeting furry farm inhabitants, perhaps? – it's pretty much a cert that Pembrokeshire’s peaceful retreat Tir Bach Farm will meet them head on and then raise you a few more. There’s even the option for the kids to learn that no, pizza does not come automatically in a box from a nice man on a scooter, as the farm barn has a woodfired pizza oven and sprogs are encouraged to play with the dough and put together their own meal. A sure-fired activity for rainy days – that also sorts dinner – most excellent. As it’s spectacular Pembrokeshire, proximity to coast and mountain comes as standard for beaches, watersports or pictorial coastal walking; Tir Bach has stonking views of the Presili Mountains, and the north Wales coast is a short drive way. The west coast, St Davids Peninsula and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are also within easy access by car. On site, the 26 acres of farmland, hay meadow and ancient woodland running down to a small river are home to wildlife including wildflowers among the hay meadows, buzzards, red kites and many other species of birds including the swallows who return every year – you might even see some nesting in the shower block. The official farm residents will also have the kids going gaga: geese, Terry the turkey, chickens and ducks; two Shetland ponies and a mule: goats, pigs, cows and Charlie and co, the farm dogs. Other facilities at Tir Bach include a playground, ball court, communal campfire area and pool room. As well as the pizza oven, the large barn has table tennis, a chiminea and a barbecue for campers’ use. Essentials for guest use include a washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge freezer, and a utilities block,converted from the old milking parlour and now with a washing-up area, toilets and hot showers.

Pembrokeshire has more Blue Flag or Seaside Award beaches than any other county in the UK – over 50 at last count – take your pick from swimming, surfing, kayaking, kitesurfing and other watersports, rockpooling and crabbing, or just stretching out on the pristine sands. Newport Bay is about 25 minutes’ drive from Tir Bach Farm beyond the Presili Hills and has six beaches popular with families as well as several coves and caves to delve into and plenty of space for sailing and windsurfing. Newport Sands, below Newport Golf Course, is the biggest of the six and The Parrog has an active windsurdfing and dinghy sailing club and lucrative rockpooling from its west end. Access the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Newport Sands: its 186 miles of headland and beach walking skirt the coast from Amroth to St. Dogmaels taking in postcard-worthy scenery, towns and villages, such as nearby Fishguard and the walled fishing town of Tenby (‘Little England beyond Wales’) on the south coast. Whether pootling around on foot or taking the car around the coast, make a stop at beaut St Davids Peninsula, home of tiny cathedral city St Davids on the River Alun and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. If you’re a surfer, Whitesands Bay two miles west is the place to launch your board, or when the tide is out, look for signs of the ancient and mostly submerged forest sticking up from the sand. Other history can be had around Pembrokeshire’s castles and forts: if you can’t quite get round all 51 of them, exploring the walls of Tenby and Pembroke is a good start, as are the fortified bishops' palaces at St Davids and Lamphey, and the mammoth fortresses of Carew, Manorbier and Pembroke Castles. If you're after kid-friendly days out, Oakwood Theme Park, Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo and Bluestone Resort's waterpark are all within a half-hour drive.
