  • Adults-only lakeside glamping site in a quiet Nottinghamshire village
  • Five minutes' walk from the river Trent; Newark 30 minutes' drive
  • Free angling available on site, with 25 pegs; private hot tubs
The name 'Peacock Lake Glamping' is an appropriately resplendent one for this gorgeous lakeside location in Nottinghamshire, where guests can treat themselves to cosy adults-only pod stays just five minutes' walk from the banks of the river Trent. Set back from the main road at the end of a peaceful close in the pretty village of Gunthorpe, this site is part of a well-established fishery that has been popular with local anglers for more than three decades. The lake was formed when gravel was dug to build Gunthorpe Bridge in the village, and today it's a popular 25-peg property with several varieties of coarse fish, including carp. All of this is free to enjoy for glamping guests. The smart ensuite accommodation on offer here is equally enticing, with a comfy double bed, well-equipped kitchen, TV, bedding and towels all coming as standard. Moving outside, there's a spacious decking area with seating where you can soak up the peaceful atmosphere, and – arguably best of all – you have access to a private luxury hot tub just for the two of you. Away from base, you can take a stroll down to the village's handful of pubs in just a few minutes, or alternatively drive a couple of miles north to Lowdham, where there are food shops and more eateries.

Local attractions

A well-maintained path runs along this stretch of the river Trent, opening up lots of opportunities for scenic cycling and walking from base. Other pleasant strolling spots such as Gedling Country Park (10 minutes' drive) and Cotgrave Country Park (10 minutes) are within easy reach too, as are the serene surrounds of Holme Pierrepont Country Park (20 minutes), home to the ever-popular National Water Sports Centre. Getting into the centre of Nottingham to see its castle or check out the shops is simple enough as well, as Peacock Lake Glamping is just over 20 minutes' drive from the city centre. Alternatively, you can get there by bus from the village in about half an hour, or by train in about a quarter of an hour from Lowdham (connected to the village by an A road, but walking or cycling to the station is safe enough thanks to a segregated dual-use path). Other options include Newark (30 minutes), a pretty market town with museums, monuments and lots of independent shops, and Southwell (15 minutes), where there's a golf course, racecourse and handsome 900-year-old minster to explore.
