Powered concrete slab caravan site (medium, semi-serviced)

Liked: This was our first ever camping trip with our new caravan. The pitch we were given was the perfect spot, far enough away from the chemical toilet and bins but not too far. I don't think this would have been a problem in any case as they were kept exceptionally clean with no smells even in the hottest day of the year! We were a short walk away from the showers and toilets which were not in the main block but a portakabin. Don't be put off by this. We were so happy with the facilities that we didn't bother trying out the main block which looked equally as nice, if not better. They were kept immaculate and we often saw staff cleaning throughout the day. The shower blocks were really spacious and water always hot. They obviously had a water softener and coming from an area with hard water, this was a real treat. The ladies at reception were cheery and helpful. There is a security system whereby your registration number is recognised upon entry and exit, to lower and raise bollards, so you always felt safe. There are vending machines at the entrance selling ice cream, milk and other essential items. I tried the freshly squeezed orange juice one morning and it was delicious. All in all an excellent campsite, I'm sure the great weather helped but we will definitely be back whatever the weather.

Disliked: If I had to be picky I would say that motor bikes didn't always stick to the 30 limit on the nearby road. It is a village so it should be fairly quiet. We found that this part of Dorset is a magnet for bikers and there are signs everywhere warning of the dangers. We were woken up quite early by birds - what you would expect in the country, but there were a lot of nesting rooks in nearby trees. I appreciate that both the above cannot be controlled by the campsite. We couldn't use our TV as we couldn't get a reception. This could be rectified if you had a fully serviced pitch (we had part serviced - electricity and water) We found the vending machines, while great, a little pricey. I expect this of good quality farm milk etc but things like beans and standard shop bread were also expensive.

Liked: Pitch was fabulous—everything we needed—-site was brilliant and accessible to all the places we wanted to visit—site wardens were very helpful to us and even tried to help with TV reception—-booked a fully serviced pitch, not realising that the TV post was only on the “super pitch”—-our fault entirely—they even offered to move us to a super pitch but we declined as we were only there for two nights—-all in all a great stay at a lovely site 👌👌

Liked: Brand new, great looking and working facilities, free wifi, 24/7 vending machines, easy to book online, even if it's the same day. Had a comfortable night on a level pitch.

Disliked: Have stayed on a couple of farm sites before, but this one was not farm-like at all.

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole. The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint. Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
