  • Well-maintained peaceful one-acre field behind a refurbished food pub
  • Within walking distance of the River Vyrnwy and the Glyndwrs Way
  • A 10-minute drive from the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway
There are certain advantages to pitching up behind a pub... especially in a field as roomy as the one at The Kings Head in Powys. There's not far to toddle after an evening supping and sipping, for a start, and if you've somewhat overdone either there's over an acre of land here for gentle calorie burning or cobweb blowing strolls afterwards: both are regal picks... Bar and restaurant meals are served daily at The Kings Head, a former coaching inn fully refurbished and updated in 2018. (Those of a certain disposition should be royally chuffed to hear that award-winning ales are also on the menu, along with lagers, cask ales and a lengthy wine list.) All food is freshly prepped to order. The pub is in the small village of Meifod, within walking distance of the River Vyrnwy and close to some top trout and salmon fishing via local farms. Elsewhere, the 135-mile Glyndwrs Way passes through the village on its Powys loop between Knighton and Welshpool, and you can puff through the countryside with ease on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway 10 minutes' drive form the pub. Across the border, Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are within 55 minutes' drive. Access to the pitching part of The Kings Head is to the back of the main pub building. The field is flat and well draining, although obviously can get muddy if it rains; if so, there are enough hardstanding pitches away from the main field to accommodate campervans, motorhomes and caravans. The site also have tractors available to tow any vehicles that become stuck.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Really lovely pub- the food was excellent and reasonably priced and staff abundant and helpful. The pitches were exactly what they said they'd be; none electric, flat grass in a quiet location. Outside seating area and football pitch ideal for kids. Basic but clean shower and loo which we weren't expecting plus access to pub facilities. Great site.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Plenty of space to park and pitch up. Lovely pub with good facilities.

Disliked: The toilet and shower facilities were really disappointing. Only one shower unit of 5 was open (the rest were ‘out of use’) meant that the facility became very dirty quickly.

Liked: Location

Disliked: Only one toilet with shower available. Which for the amount of vans and tents was not enough, also the Men’s pub toilets were full of flies and smelly

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The pub, the food, hardstanding as well as field.

Disliked: The showers had broken glass, the showers and toilets weren't cleaned in the time we were there (sat to tues). They would have been great had they been maintained and safe and clean.

Local attractions

Spectacular scenery and walks are all around: you only have to amble a couple of minutes to reach Meifod village and access to the registered national trail of the Glyndŵr's Way. Running through Powys on a loop taking in Machynlleth, the Dyfi estuary and the River Vyrnwy valley, the trail was established in 2000 to celebrate the famed Welsh prince  Owain Glyndŵr who led the Welsh Revolt against England in 1400. If you're up for hiking yet further, drive 40 miles or so to the start of the Glyndŵr's Way at Knighton (or walk it, if you're feeling hardy), where the trail joins up with the famed Offa's Dyke Path from Sedbury to Prestatyn. Or say a placid Pah to all that and see the countryside with a peaceful ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, on its chuffingly scenic eight and a half-mile track from  Welshpool to Llanfair Caereinion via Castle Caereinion to the village of Llanfair Caereinion. It's half an hour's drive from the pub to lovely Lake Vyrnwy for sailing and waterside horse riding or cycling; this is prime wildlife watching land too, as the lake is a national nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation.
