Power optional grass tent site (four person)

Liked: Amazing site, lots of woodland for walks and walled grass play areas for ball games. Brand new play park for children. Plenty of toilets and toilet shower blocks are kept clean. Large site and even though busy for bank holiday weekend everyone was respectful and having a great time, i didn’t see one piece of litter anywhere the whole weekend. Staff friendly and helpful, site is very close to the small town.

Disliked: Not so much a dislike as did fine but could possibly do with 1 or 2 more showers and washing up sinks.

Power optional grass tent site (four person)

Liked: Clean, friendly site. Really liked the fact the toilets are coded so not just anyone can use them. Pitches are good and flat. WiFi was very good for a campsite, helped keep in touch with our older children who stayed at home. Location was great!

Disliked: Nothing, great site will be returning

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Really liked the relaxed atmosphere, hot and powerful (free) showers, and the space to camp as a group. The site has a fantastic woodland, complete with fairy village for the kids, and neighbours onto a conservation area full of wildlife (we were lucky enough to see an osprey amongst other birds and mammals). On the doorstep is an abundance of walks and bike routes meandering through and over the surrounding mountains and valleys - Happy Valley is a must to see the wild rhododendrons. The mountains really provide a stunning backdrop to the camp site.

Disliked: The camping field is right next to a busy road, with boy racers and their fat exhausts tearing by regularly. However, this is nicely drowned out by the nesting crows, squabbling in the treetops from dawn to dusk. There are no pitches marked out so pitching is a bit of a free for all and if you go out for the day, be ready to return to find a tent where you parked your car or sat out in the evening. Turn up early and stick out your elbows to get some space. Whilst the showers were gloriously warm and powerful, three showers and five toilets is a bit tight for the number of people on site. With it being a busy bank holiday weekend, the toilets quickly ran out of paper, the loos dirty, and the floors wet. The bins also were overflowing and the staff seemed intent on only cutting two small areas of grass, meaning the rest was a bit long and very wet.

Liked: Lovely staff. Good walk for the dog. Handy for the Tal-y-Llyn railway.

Disliked: Forgot to take glasses for the 2am toilet run so the number lock on the loo was a problem.

Local attractions

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
