  • Family park in Cantal, famed for its forests and volcanic hot springs
  • Surrounded by the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park
  • Café bar, takeaway, playground, pétanque court, fishing and cycle hire
It's not just any old bar you'll quench your thirst at after a day hiking around these splendid volcanic parts: the one at friendly and family-run Camping La Santoire in the Cantal department is favoured by the local villagers, so a proper French evening among amiable locals awaits. Drop into the pub after a day of activity around this lush land, hiking around the woodland around the site, hiring a bike from the Camping La Santoire team to investigate further, or having at it with a day of local horse riding, mountain biking or skiing around the surrounding Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park. Camping La Santoire is a three-minute walk from the village of Saint-Bonnet-de-Condat, in the Auvergne department in central France. It's a green, pretty and shaded place, with fishing direct from the site in the trout-laden waters of the Santoire river, and close to lakes for more fishing as well as waterfalls for more hiking: bag a map at reception for info on the best cascading trails. You can dig into the local cuisine nearby at Saint-Bonnet-de-Condat, or lounge around on site for lazy and food-filled times at the café-bar or for picnics via supplies from the shop or a takeaway. A playground and a pétanque court are on site for gentle activity afterwards.

Local attractions

Camping La Santoire is within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park, the biggest natural park in Europe. You might agree it's one of the most spectaular too: its vast expanse covers almost 400,000 hectares across the departments of Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, made up of peaks, forests and hot springs. To find out all about it, it's just over an hour from Camping La Santoire to the main information office of the park, the Maison du Parc in the Château de Montlosier in Aydat. Closer to home, access the GR 4 for hiking hours around those local lakes and waterfalls, or take your energetic self for more of the same around the extinct volcano of the Puy Mary, 35 minutes' drive away. Or jump onto the tourist train of the Gentian Express 20 minutes away in Riom-ès-Montagnes, running 16 kilometres to Lugarde past the Barajol, Lugarde and Chassagny viaducts. The Super Besse and Super Lioran ski destinations are around 35 kilometres away in either direction from the site.

Liked: Beautiful little peaceful site in stunning scenery. Owners are delightful and so helpful. Spotlessly clean facilities. Pretty little village although somewhat remote. Food in snack bar very nice and prices of food and drink very reasonable. Sound of cow bells as morning alarm call is a wonderful sound. A perfect site to sit back and let nature slow you down.

Disliked: A bit remote for some so unless you enjoy walking or cycling up hills then not a lot to do. Reliable vehicle needed to travel narrow mountain roads. None of this is a detriment to what the site is.

Powered grass and gravel motorhome site

Liked: The friendliness of the two owners. The quietness of the small campsite. The bar and snacks were really good. Good, clean, hot showers. Having given an honest review of the site NOW, the two young owners , who only took over last February, will make this site really good in the future I'm sure.

Disliked: The isolation, nothing in walking distance. Difficult to find but the owners are going to instal better signs. Not keen on having to get a token for the water and the chemical toilet needs isolating away from the water.
