  • Dog-friendly site with direct access to a beach on Quiberon Bay
  • Plage de Kervert 10 minutes’ drive; Vannes 40 minutes; Carnac one hour
  • Play area, pétanque court and bike hire; food trucks and morning bread
An impressive base from where to explore the rugged coastline of Brittany, Camping Port Sable sits in Port Navalo, at the north westernmost end of the Rhuys Peninsula, which encloses the Gulf of Morbihan and its many green, beach-fringed islands. The location is so spectacular, it might have you pinching yourself. But the facilities at this family-friendly site – with tall pine trees for shade and direct access to a sandy beach on Quiberon Bay – are not to be sniffed at either. Besides large and impeccably maintained toilet and shower blocks (with facilities for disabled guests) and a launderette, there is a multisports pitch and a pétanque court for family tournaments. From here, it is also possible to access several cycle paths (bike hire – including electric bikes – is available on site) and the GR34, a long-distance coastal hiking trail. On the other hand, you might prefer to leave the kids to navigate the playground’s adventure course while you relax on a sun lounger on the terrace, your canine companion snoring gently by your side as you read a book from the library box and take in the views of the marina of Port Crouesty (five minutes’ drive or bike ride, or a 20-minute walk). In addition to a breakfast delivery of freshly baked bread and delectably flaky pastries, there are food trucks in the evening, plus a communal barbecue area. The nearest shop is right by Port Crouesty, and you can store any supplies in the communal freezer.

Local attractions

The beaches along this Atlantic stretch of Brittany are truly spectacular, especially at sunset. At Fogeo there is a sailing school and a large children’s area with inflatable structures, while Plage de Kervert has shallow waters for swimming, and Plage du Rohu is the spot for rockpooling (all about 10 minutes’ drive). The medieval town of Vannes (40 minutes) is surrounded by a set of formidable and largely well-preserved fortifications. Take a walk along the centuries-old walls, admiring the manicured gardens below (the Jardin des Remparts). The Port de Vannes is a pretty marina that stretches along the narrow La Marle river. At the opposite end of Quiberon Bay from the site, Carnac (one hour) is renowned for the Neolithic menhirs dotting its surroundings. Start a tour from the Maison des Mégalithes visitor centre and the Alignements de Carnac, where three rows of nearly 3,000 prehistoric stones stretch for almost four miles.
