Local attractions

There's so much to see around this part of the Lot… first up should be a day at local town Carennac, listed as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its old streets are lined with 16th and 17th-century houses in the local white-yellow stone, and its 16th-century castle the Château de Doyen has an exhibition on the town's history. Close by is a very famed and popular French holiday destination in the small but spectacular cliffside village of Rocamadour, a place of pilgrimage for centuries. It's one of the most visited places in France (around a million souls every year), but is a must-see if you're in the region; try going early or out of season to escape its busiest times. Also nearby is the Padirac Chasm or Gouffre de Padirac, a 99-metre chasm and the most visited cave in France. It's also a must, particularly taking the underground boat past its caverns and lake. Other towns in the area – also highly recommended – are the red sandstone village of Collonges-la-Rouge, the medieval towns of Sarlat and Gramat with their famed architecture and weekly markets, and the town of Bretenoux and its 13th-century Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux.
